Default "Pre" Model 40

Local shop has one of these I'd say was a good 95% condition. Is this one worth $500?? I don't have one in the collection and haven't seen one in a while. Thanks in advance.

They are hard to find for less than that.

Don't see them for sale very often. Is there a box? I found this one (SN 1818), probably 1953) six years ago for $600 and it is 95% at best. Good luck.

I wouldn't wait....that is a fair price, and they don't turn up that often.

Here's mine, from December 1953

Best Regards, Les

Jeff: I have SN 1819 which was gifted from Carl Hellstrom to C K Davis, president of Remington Arms and engraved as sunch. It shipped on Dec. 9th, 1953, and appears to remain NIB. A consecutive pair?

They don't come up for sale very often, that's a pretty good price vs condition. Don't walk, run to the LGS and bring that puppy home. You will really enjoy it. If you are able to, check under the left grip and see if the grip safety lock pin is there. Makes it a bit more desirable.

I got mine for $300 at a pawn shop that seems to use random pricing on any Smith that does not have a model number under the yoke. $500 guns listed for $300 (because it was old) and the occasional $150 gun for $1000. It's my favorite j-frame. Less felt recoil than another centerfire J I have fired and a nice looking gun. And I like the idea of carrying a gun that is older than I am.

Looks like December 1953 was a busy month for shipping these. HereĎs another one.

I have several Centennials. My oldest is S/N 1142 was shipped Oct 1953.
3 of my Centennials (pre 40/42)
are Air weights with the extra bug screw) these are not very common as they only made 30k from 1953 to 1974. Because they didnít sell that well initially ( they are know a huge seller for S&W in SS as a 640 or 642.)
