It has a C prefix serial number, I'm sure.
Here is the contrasting configuration DWalt was referring to. This one is a high S prefix gun and it shipped three years to the month before yours (September, 1947). Note the long action hammer and the "figure 8" thumbpiece.

The Sheriff wore a Model 10 or pre-10, sometimes in a shoulder holster. Had a five-inch barrel and stag grips.

Snubbies are always cool, regardless of vintage.

Some Might Say.

A lot of the veteran dicks carried these in crossdraw holsters. They wore London Fog raincoats or long wool coats, and fedoras on their heads. I’ve heard a lot of great tales from those guys. Just paying attention to them was very valuable training. And maybe saved my hide a few times. I know of a couple of bad guys that faced those snubs loaded with 158 grain round nose bullets. That was their last vision.

Here is mine from December 1949. If I ever spot one of the scarce round butt versions, or better yet one with the long action and round butt I will be hard pressed not to acquire it.
I think I have a Lewis crossdraw holster around here for it.

Didn’t a lot of old-timers carry those 200 grain Super-Police loads. They were inherently unstable and key-holed causing really bad wounds? That is what my dad always carried in his Chiefs Special.

My Dad carried Super Vels when they became available as did I. But the departments we both worked for issued 158 grain round nose ammo. And there were not as many choices as we have today. The detectives I knew from the 60’s carried snubs. And I don’t recall them carrying any spare rounds. One detective I knew in the 70’s carried a 29-2. At various times in my career I carried a 4 inch Model 10, replaced by a 59. As a detective I carried a 36, the 59, or a 2 1/2 inch 19 depending on the assignment.

This type of snubby was also used in Harrison Ford's 1985 "Witness".

Unsure why director used a much older gun given the film was based around the present day, I.E. 1985.

In ‘74 I was one of the youngest detectives in our squad and was carrying my issued Colt DS w/one reload when I, along w/two uniformed cops, got into a gunfight w/armed robbery suspects. I exhausted all twelve rounds before we put down all three suspects. If anyone knows the whereabouts of that Colt, serial #689642, please send me a PM.

Those are cool but I don’t know anything about them. It’s interesting today that rounds that were once labeled “Police Only” are pretty mild in comparison to what we can all buy at just about anyplace but Dick’s or WalMart.

Old cops mostly don’t like change. If Ford’s character became a cop in the 70’s, he very well could be carrying the same gun he got when he hit plainclothes. And the movie-viewing public recognized that snub as a “detective gun” in 1985. My best guess.

Mine too. A 2" K-frame snub is one thing I don't have. I have a very nice Rossi 971 snub, but it still isn't a S&W.

A 2" M65 would be about perfect. A 2" M10 or M64 would be about the next best thing.

If I had been a snubby-carrying detective back in the 50s, I probably would have preferred a Colt DS. It just seems to be ergonomically better than the M&P.

I don’t recall what Broderick Crawford carried, but I have a small bit of history with him!

In September of 1967, he had car accident and was injured in the village where I live, a few blocks from my house. About a year or so later, when I was a young town cop, I stopped him for speeding in an adjacent village. He was known to be a heavy drinker, but I saw no evidence of that when I interviewed him.

He is buried with his mother in Johnstown, NY. I never knew what his Central New York connection was, but he was in the Syracuse area occasionally.

I’ve posted this elsewhere... it’s a 10-5 that came to me in mostly stock form as boot in a trade for a lightweight 45 Gov’t Model I had built. This was about 30 years ago and my dad liked it, so since he had just gotten his CCP (@ age 65 or so) a gunsmith friend and I put a bobbed hammer on it, slicked up the action, and found an original set of Magnas and a Tyler T-grip to finish the package. Although he had it many years, I don’t think he fired it more than a couple of times (if at all) and AFAIK never carried it concealed. After Dad passed away I gave it to my brother who had me return it to plain stock and then probably put it in his night stand. Can you say “long and checkered past?”

PS An interesting side note ~ it came to me with a set of square butt smooth finger groove combats that went on to become my favorite grip style for the next 20+ years!

My very first CCW was a 2" M10 RB circa 1978/79. When I wanted to go to a smaller J Frame platform I foolishly sold the M10. Should have just kept it - but back then what the heck did I know......

I don't have an M&P or Model 10 snubby, but a couple of my vintage favorites (a la Dragnet and Highway Patrol) are this Model 15-2 ('62) and a Colt Detective Special ('52). Both are fun to shoot and surprising accurate. Besides, they're just plain cool!

A genuine original Victory snubby would be extremely desirable. Aside from the Victories, the more valuable S&W M&P snubbies are those few made prior to WWII. The next most desirable ones would be the post-war long action M&P snubbies in the S-series (such as pictured in #46 above).

I remember that episode of Dragnet. Sgt. Friday went to the laundromat to buy a pack of Lucky Strikes, and surprised a pair of low lifes, messing with a coin changing machine. When one of them fired at Sgt. Friday, he returned fire. I don’t think he made it to the hospital.

During the Internal Investigation, they could not find the slug that was fired at Joe. He was in big trouble. Joe went back to the laundromat the next day and found that the bullet had slid along the bottom of a shelf, and lifted it just enough, to allow the shelf to cover the hole in the wall. The Investigator remembered seeing a black streak along the bottom of the shelf, but assumed it was a pencil mark, make by the carpenter. Never assume anything.

I did not watch Dragnet very often. I think I was too young. But for some reason, I remember that episode.

I remember watching reruns of Dragnet 1967 long ago when I was working my first job and had a 4:00 PM to midnight shift. Nick at Night played IIRC 2 episodes every week night airing about 1:00 AM so it was a favorite. I am like IndyNick and well remember the episode with Friday shooting the criminal at the laundrymat. In many ways my favorite character was Gannon for the humor he had such as bringing his lunch in a tackle box with various foods in the compartments. Friday finds a fish hook mixed in the slot with the carrots and Gannon says that was good and it would have been bad if it was mixed with the celery.
