Default Baby Chief S/N 101

Baby Chief 101 just sold online a few days ago. Congratulations to whoever it was if they are a member here. I was lucky to pick up one like it (round sight, flat latch, numbered grips) a couple years ago, and I love it. I am sure whoever got this one will feel the same. Hopefully they are on here and will post some good pictures.

If it were one of the bright blue ones, I would have been all over it.

Watched that auction this past Sunday night too. Hope it's ok to copy pics from site and post.
What a cool serial number!

That's a neat one. I saw it on a different auction site last year but can't recall if it sold, and if so what it sold for.

I have s/n 99 in the same configuration.

It's interesting to note the flat latch is different than what many call the "first style flat latch." It's more squared and shorter in height (hard to tell in the photos).

There was another one sold last week on GB. Pretty much mint condition and it went for $1926.

That's correct as long as it is a completed auction

I am happy to have bought my 1770 one for about half what 101 sold for. Now reading or seeing s/n 99, the bright blue, and especially the nickel finish make me jealous. I guess I might need an early nickel on like that to keep my nickeled 38/44 HD transitional company. Thanks to all for sharing.

Baby Chiefs #101 is in the S&W Forum.com fold. I do not have it in my hands yet, but should sometime next week. I have been looking for a Chiefs Special for a while. The longer I looked, the more I wanted a flat-latch. Then I added a want for a half-moon front sight. And what the heck, might as well get a birth year piece too. I am also a bit of a sucker for serial numbers that I find interesting. So, there it was pretty much all in one package, and with number matching service stocks as an added plus . I spent more than I wanted to, but not as much as I would have. At this age it's not prudent to wait for a bargain to come along. The pictures were not the best, so we shall see what I end up with soon. I will likely get it lettered by Mr. Jinks to see where it went on its first adventure.
I'm interested in any comments. And Two-Bit Cowboy, I will get you some good pictures of the latch. To me it looked like the "first style flat latch", but I am nowhere as seasoned as you when looking at these.
It's amazing how much information about these is documented in this Forum. Maybe this will give us a new tidbit, who knows.

My comments:

Very early Baby Chiefs used Service stocks (below), but not for very long. And by ~ #4XX we see Mini Magnas, almost exclusively. Chiefs used the new post war thumb latch for a very short time, then the 1st flat latch was introduced and used sporadically until after ~ #117, and exclusively after that with exceptions of course.

The nicest I've ever seen, two-bit cowboy's Baby Chiefs with rd top service grips, rd sight, smooth trigger, 1st style thumb latch, and early rare bright blue:

JH1951

Congratulations! I am glad someone here picked up S/N 101. I was so excited when I saw it I accidentally posted something about it while forgetting about not being able to make a post during an auction. I couldn’t wait until it was over to be able to post something. I am mor of a 1917 guy, but I love my baby chief. It is one of my favorites.

Thanks for your comments. They are always appreciated.
I don't think there will be a nicer one than two-bit cowboy's to surface. That is beautiful, and an example of how the first batch rolled off the line. Likely not many more around in that condition and configuration.
I guess #101 may be an example of the first variation with the new flat-latch? S&W must have simply had bins of parts available from which they randomly pulled parts that would fit the piece they had in hand. If nothing more, it tells us that the differing parts were at the same place at the same time.
Now I would like to get a period correct holster for it. I assume there may be 'fittment' issues with ones made for the newer frame?

Very nice early gun.
IIRC my Baby Chief is somewhere around serial 1100 with Magnas n 1st style flat latch.

On a side note many years ago I picked up 2 non serial numbered NOS SW Baby Chief half penny barrels in Bright blue,
I never understood why they were factory bright blue since all the ones I knew of were satin.
Now know why , they must have been leftovers from the early bright blue gun run.

Here are a few pictures of Baby Chiefs SN 101. The piece was much better than the pictures indicated, and a thorough cleaning revealed a very nice piece (I got very lucky). Being a birth year piece, I will say that 101 aged much better than I did. These pictures are not the best. Two coats of Ren Wax after these pictures really made it pop. I will get some better ones if the sun ever comes out again.

That’s a really cool serial number, and a beautiful Baby Chief. Well Done, Congratulations!

I didn’t see what you paid, but I picked up 12340 last year for $1425, too much or too early...who cares, I fell in ‘lust’ with it..Still today I love to hold and shoot it from time to time. It’s a smooth ramp, not nearly as neat or as rare as your round site. Besides my K Series Masterpiece set of 3, it’s my absolute favorite.

Enjoy! Is a range report in our future?

Congratulations!
Happy for you but so jealous! I’ve been on the “hunt” for a “Baby Chiefs Special nickel sight” a long time.
I have a couple but smooth ramp and serrated ramp, but always desired the nickel ramp.
Sincerely enjoy!

Well, I think the OP did just fine. Some may think he paid a little too much, but there are only a few of these half coin front sight Baby Chiefs out there. The service stocks are another rarity, and I actually prefer a gun with a little finish wear, as then I wouldn't worry about running a few gentle rounds through it from time to time.

A smooth ramp CS is the closest I've come to the OP's beautiful little Chief...

Congratulations on a very nice Baby!!

Best Regards, Les
