Don't think so. S&W management made the decision to assign numbers to products sometime in 1957. Very few, I think, if any of them were actually numbered that year and it took a year or more before all were leaving the factory with numbers. Plenty of opportunity though for confusion on serial numbers and ship dates so someone may have a 25-2 which they think is from 1955 but is actually later. According to the Standard Catalog the 25-2 didn't begin shipping until 1961.

One thought I had was they had a box with the 1955 date that they used for a long time, I have seen other people think this told them the date.

A lot of the boxes from 1955 on say April ?, 1955 and that is where a lot of people get the date.
There was a Gun on GB this week listing said pre 37 3" but the description said original box and it said model 37.

Reagan said it best "Trust but verify"

Info printed on box top used for a long time is copyrighted 1955 and an incredible number of people think that's the date on the gun.

The 25-2is the number designation of the model 1955. Heavy barreled 45acp target. Lots of 25-2 barrels have the 1955 on the one side. I have several so marked and one actual 5 screw model of 1955. Tapered barrels were marked model of 1950, but not made for long

Could be any of the above or merely a typo. Perhaps they meant to type 1965???

Exclamation Saw the same add

I saw the same add....I think.....

If this is the one for $1,200 out of Colorado, then it is pretty clear.

It is a Model 25-2, barrel is roll stamped with model 1955 as normal. Has a 6.5" bbl, no box, and serial number puts it at 1979 to 1980 per SCSW 4th, so yea...……..pre lock.

I think it is just the way you read the add....as it says simply Model 25-2 1955, which yes could be interpreted that the Seller is saying 1955 but the roll stamp on the bbl is the only 1955.

I don't think the add was intentionally deceptive as the Seller is a reputable source dealer, not a private seller, and has been registered for several years and has it listed for a top end price.

Attached pics are my Model 25-2, Lettered as shipping Feb 14, 1972 so you can see an example of the barrel roll stamp.
