Picked up a model 48, need some info not found in the SCSW4
I picked up a good condition 4 screw model 48 .22 mag this past weekend at the local gun show. Serial dates to 1959, the year the 48 was introduced. Stocks had been replaced with newer football targets but I had a nice set of correct diamond targets that needed a new home. According to the SCSW #4, the 48 was introduced in May of 1959. It also states that the model was changed to 48-1 later that year for the change to the extractor rod threads from right to left hand. Does anyone have an idea when the change took place and maybe, hopefully how many 48s were made before going to the -1? Pics posted below with the new shoes and fresh coat of Ren wax.

The engineering directive to change the threads on the extractor rod and stem was issued on December 22, 1959, but took well over two years to implement with the -1 model variation not being shipping until 1962. The Model 48 was made for nearly three years before the change was implemented.
The photos of your Model 48 show it has an extractor rod with a small relieved area machined behind the knurled tip. If this is correct, it suggests your Model 48 was returned to S&W for replacement of the original extractor rod and stem. Is there a month and year stamped on the grip frame (for example 9 63 would indicate it was worked on in September 1963)?

My Model 48, shipped in March '61, has the newer ejector rod mentioned, but also has 9 4 08 stamped on the lower left side of the frame.
Does that suggest other work or the new ejector rod?

Homie...No way to know for certain, but since it has the new extractor rod, it may have been returned for that.

I have three M48's. One from 59, one 60, and one 61. All are M48 no dashes. Big Larry

I have # 368119, shipped 7-16-59. It is a 6" in its original blue overstamped box. What is your serial number? Mine also has the matching magna stocks. Big Larry

Bill,
Thanks for the quick reply- I don't think it's a date stamp as I've owned the gun since the early '90s w/o returning it to Springfield.
BTW - Loved the new book-THANKS!

Check to see if that is the assembly number on the yoke.
Early Mod 48s don't follow the rules. I have seen several with left hand threads that are simply marked "Mod 48" (with no dash).

I checked the frame under the stocks and the only markings were the assembly # that matches the one on the yoke.
