Default 1917/1937

I just won this revolver on GB for 425 and I really didn't buy it for the gun. It's most definitely been re-blued and I already have a 1937 that's all original. I'll give you guys three guesses why I bought it and the first two don't count...

Once you soak those stocks in acetone for a few days to get that horrible varnish off they should be really nice.

Absolutely I did a very close up of the checkering and it all looked good but that refinish is terrible but can be made right.

Well I think I can, considering with a little TLC the stocks are worth about what I paid for the gun.

I probably will pass it along once I get it because re-blue guns are not something I generally buy and I can assure you the price will be right. The GB seller sort of hinted at a re-blue but didn't come out and say it.

Well, once you get those grips off of it and are ready to throw the rest away, throw it my way, please. I don’t mind a reblue.

There's a very good chance after I get it and those pre-war magnas are cleaned up I'll put it in the for sale section here.

I'm late to the party, but you bought it for the lanyard ring pin?

Nice snag. I once passed on a reblued polished to death 2nd model 44HE at a little local show for $600.00 that had a nicer set of prewar magnas on it than your .45. Sometimes I kick myself, I know what the grips were worth, but then I would have been stuck with an ugly 6" .44 without a set of grips....

Can you say Pachmayr and GunBroker?

GOOD for you, Andy! I hope that is not polyurethane. If it is, acetone doesn't do much to some brands, but there are strippers that will- it's just a bit harder/slower.

Your Division Chief should grant you a 72 hour special liberty for such an outstanding job.

very possible it could be one of the apx. 1/2 dozen I built back in the early 90's - Century arms was selling guns as gunsmith's specials [ missing parts or malfunctioning ] for about $20.00 each - - Numrich was selling the N frame diamond take off grips for an on clearance price of $9.95 - I should have bought more + kept some ! -

Compared to many I've seen thats not a "terrible" re-blue job, at least in my opinion. You can still make out the Brazilian crest, how does it look under those ugly stocks?

As strange as it may sound on my first ship DD-841 I didn't have a Division Chief, we had a green ensign that didn't know squat. When the ship was decommissioned in 1973 I was the senior Non-Com for my area.

Back in 1973, I was a Marine Option midshipman on board the DDG-18, the USS Semmes. Back then, 3rd class Navy and Marine middies both served their summer cruise aboard ships. One day, a recently commissioned ensign from Canoe U (the Naval Academy ) looked at me and, family friendly, said, "Midshipmen are lower than whale poop at the bottom of the ocean!" I replied, "Yes Sir! And if we ARE lower than whale poop and the next higher thing than a midshipman would be an ensign, does that make you whale poop, Sir!?" He glared at me for a couple of seconds, then told me to get the heck out of his area. I smiled, said "Aye, aye sir!" and left, grinning all the way.

Muley I always tried to be as respectful as I could with the green ensigns most of them were just about the same age as me. I certainly had spent more time at sea then they had and had more knowledge then they in ships operations but in the future they be in command of a ship and have men's life's in their hands.

just spent over an hour going thru old sales receipts - I only came up with one serial # for the half dozen I put together back then - it is 2081XX , if I find the others i'll let you know - small chance it could be one I put together with those grips , but you never know -

Some of those Century Arms Brazilians come through rough as a cob, while others looked pretty fair. Then there were some with finish worn thin but not worn or beat up... a little cleaning and blue and some of those 1937s turned into some pretty nice guns. I got two of them out of that batch, one my youngest brother cleaned up, added grips and shoots. The other, my Uncle got, had lightly polished and blued, then added modern grips, and got a great revolver for his one and only handgun. I don't think I could pry either one loose from their respective owners.

of the ones I received from Century all were missing grips , one was missing cylinder , most just required cleaning + minor adjustments -

How difficult was it fitting that cylinder? I think at that time in my life if got that gun and had to fit a cylinder anyway I would have considered looking for a barrel and cylinder and converted it to another caliber, probably 44 Special. Even back then, an available N-frame donor gun was a nice find.

I got complete cylinder w/extractor star + rods from Springfield Sporters in PA. - timing was perfect but I had to increase barrel to cyl. gap slightly - sometimes you get lucky + other times it becomes a frustrating hassle - FYI back in the 60's Numrich sold kits w/ complete cyl. + barrels to convert them to .357 mag. -

Those kits were for the Colt New Service revolvers, not the S&W 1917.

storage facility where my pre 1970 magazines are stored is not an essential business here so it will have to wait till after state lock down is over -

What do you call those grips ?? Not one of these replies have helped give me an idea of what to look for - or IF other "N" frame grips will even fit the 1917/1937 frames.

BTW - my 1937 delivered to Brazil in 1946 - looks as good as yours - but still has the original finish. I got lucky.

Those stocks are Service stocks. The ones shipped Jon th e prewar Models we’re the same as the stocks on the commercial model 1917. The ones shipped on yours (after the war) were surplus parts found in the dark recesses of S&W and did not have medallions.

The grips on andy52's 1917, pictured in post #1, are pre WW II Magnas. These are very expensive , as they weren't fitted to that many revolvers. $300-$400 is not uncommon.

The grips seen in post #6 are pre WW II service grips. These were found on the first shipment of 1917s sent to Brazil in 1938. They were also found on most pre WW II N frame revolvers.

I just ordered/bought these for my late (1946) 1937 model. They are rosewood, & PO swears they will fit MY N frame Brazil contract.
They are very attractive "new Magna Grips". What do you think of them - OK on a 1937 shooter ?? I'll save my original grips.
Thanks, C.

They will probably be a bit short at the butt, but otherwise they will be fine.
