Two more weeks in the 50/50 mix and it's a bit better. Maybe it's time to move onto the bronze wool?

Looks like you're at the oil+bronze wool stage. Lite touch, but looking good. A good scrubbing of the bore and chambers with a bronze bore brush+oil is also indicated.

Then just a wipe off of the oil and take her to the range .

In case it wasn't mentioned above, I'll just throw out the tip that you can use dental floss, round toothpicks (or better, the slightly heavier hors d'oeuvre skewers that are about 1/8 inch in diameter and about for or five inches long -- available at just about any supermarket) and a stiff-bristle toothbrush to work resistant bits of grime out of corners and crevices. The floss is particularly good for cleaning gunk out of the space between the barrel shank and the top frame of the revolver. You can use the wooden picks almost as a pinpoint oiler if you want to put some solvent right on an exact spot that needs more work. It's not necessary to flood the whole surface with fluid when you are working on a tiny spot of rust.

Love seeing the progress, and the OP's patience most would have taken the poor thing to a wire wheel thereby destroying any remaining original finish. I thought everyone would enjoy seeing a few of his work in progress photos together. Great work !

If you haven't already, its time to open the cylinder. Push the thumbpiece forward, holding the butt in your right hand, and with your left hand wrapped under the gun, push the cylinder to the left. Once opened, try pushing the extractor rod in and out. The idea is to see if any of that is stuck. With the cylinder open, it can be easily removed with one additional step, and that will help with further cleaning.

After that, you can move to dis-assembly. We can all help with that.

Nice work so far, Mike Priwer

Birchwood-Casey makes a pretty good gun bore cleaner that I have used successfully on some gunked up military surplus rifles. You just don't want it on any blue finish you intend to keep, 'cause it'll remove it. I think I would try a metal polish/cleaner like Flitz or Mother's Mag along with some bronze or brass wool and a brass brush on the external pitting and to clean up the cylinder chambers. A brass bore brush, Mother's Mag and electric drill would brighten up those chambers, IMO.

You must understand that to collectors, even a poor "original finish" is much desired and valuable over a new refinish. Do not be in a hurry as you'll surely damage the remaining finish. Soak, soft cloth or bristle tooth brush, soak again. Time is your friend.
