M&P 5 screw?
Hi,
I’m not that familiar with the old M&Ps and I hope someone can give me an idea of what I have here considering it’s condition.
I believe it was produced in the 30s and actually belonged to someone kind of famous.
The finish is almost as perfect as you’d find on a gun today with barely a turn line, I don’t think the gun has even been fired.

It's a lot older than you think. Late teens I think maybe even older than that but for sure it was made before 1920. It is perfect, I love it!! Sorry I can not help be more specific but somebody will for sure.

If that s/n is 787xxx then prob shipped in 1941. But that mushroom ejector knob makes no sense. Those were phased out in 1927. The stocks look like they are from the late teens, early 20's.
I have a feeling I'm going to learn something with this gun.

Oops. I read the serial number the wrong way. 274xxx makes a lot more sense. Shipped in 1917 more than likely. Great revolver.

Welcome! It's a .38 Military & Police with a round butt grip frame. The serial number and stocks put it late in the 1910 decade.
Who was the kind of famous former owner?

I’m reading the serial as 274484, which would put it in 1917.
First half of the year, as it still has the sideplate logo, which was discontinued in mid-year as a war-economizing measure.
It looks to be in very good shape for that vintage, including the stocks.

I knew it was old but not THAT old. And the pics don’t do it justice, it really is close to mint condition.
It’s NFS, but what would this gun in this condition be worth approximately?
Someone asked who the kind of famous previous owner was...
Guys name was Lee Davidson.
He did a lot of work with radar when it first came out and I believe he was the inventor of radar assisted anti aircraft weapons prior to WWII.
Just after D-Day, he went on several missions in France to do something with radar (not exactly sure of the details).

On my list is a 274xxx which shipped in 4/17. I have my doubts about the originality of the finish.

I have 2755xx, a very similar gun but with a 5" barrel. It shipped August 1917. Original finish for sure.
Given the condition of the grips, unless I'm missing something I'm inclined to believe the O.P.'s gun is all original.

Case colors are good. Sideplate seam, as best we can tell from the pictures, is good. Letter and number edges look sharp. Rebound spring pin end is still rounded. Very importantly, there is no bluing on the cone portion of the extractor rod knob.
I'd say all evidence points to this being the original finish.
A very nice example from the WWI period! A well-cared-for revolver.
