Model 27 S series 4 screw

Last week I posted a question as to when the Gold Boxes were out of use; here is why. I have this very nice 6.5 inch M27 in a gold box. The ser# is crayoned on the back. Ser # S186288 which I place at early 1958. Based on the input I received on the question , I think I have the correct setup. Concur or dispute folks.

I can't help you but I will say that my 6.5" M-27 is my favorite gun.

Smith and Wesson never let anything go to waste, so if that box was found they would have used it even if they we're switching over to the blue. If there is only 1 number written on the back in either pencil or white grease pencil (crayon) then it is most likely original. The gold boxes for 357 mag are tough to find in a particular Barrel length and finish and are expensive when found. They would even put stickers over end labels to use up boxes or stamp over a barrel length or finish just to use the box and get the gun out boxed up. I suspect yours is original to your gun and I am envious because I have a 1955/56 pre- 27 with 6.5 inch barrel but no gold box for it. I have seen them sell for $200 to $300 on Bay in very nice condition. The sight adjustment tools (screwdrivers) are getting expensive too. I paid $100 for a blued 8 or 9 row knurled one for mine but at least it is in perfect condition.

I just bought some beautiful S&W Coke Bottle grips for mine.
M-27 shipped 3/11/1960, 6.5" S198211.

There are times I'd think I'd like to have the correct box, tools and papers.
I'm just not too sure just how bad I want them. Maybe one day I will add them.

On the issue of tools. What would be the correct set of tools for a ‘50’s generation Smith?

I started a thread about a year ago asking the exact same question. Doc44 was kind enough to answer and post a picture of his beautiful set up. Unfortunately I only have a tablet or my phone to do everything so I can not put his response here via touchscreen. I will type what he said though. He says the cotton swab will have a brass threaded base an aluminum cleaning rod the swab screws into long enough for your barrel and brass cleaning brush that also screws into cleaning rod with brass threaded base. A s.a.t. known as a sight adjustment tool, yours would be either an all blue 8 row screwdriver or an aluminum handle 8 row screwdriver. Also a helpful hints brochure would have been included. Hope this makes sense and helps some and I thank Doc44 as the man that provided this info. To me.

I would expect that that is the correct vintage box for that gun and the numbers appear to mach. Congrats - a beautiful example of a 1958 gun in its box.

Well, you have the gun and what appears to be the original numbered box with faded grease pencil...I'd say that is pretty definitive evidence that they match.

There is a recent post that showed a model 16-2 from the mid-sixties with the same style box. The factory never wasted anything. Enjoy!
