Default 0 prefix K22?

Can anyone explain this? Sold today at auction. If factory engraving or special ordered to be engraved, I would expect the logo to be on the left. Did someone decide he did not like the factory-applied serial number?

Sounds like a Club Gun, but the link will not open anymore.

This item sold for $3000 -15% + other costs.

An older S&W with a leading number "0" could be a club gun but I suspect the auctioneer did not read/transcribe the s/n correctly as they also listed a Model 64 with a s/n with a leading "0".

I find it hard to believe an auctioneer would transcribe a number wrong.

This is a light ribbing of the auction industry - - right?

The link is not working, but I would suspect the "serial number" came from the same area as the assembly number . Hope the buyer got his money's worth.

Yep. LOTS of dealers think the assembly number is the serial number.
Here is the link-
Striking Smith & Wesson, K-22 Masterpiece, 3rd Model, Revolver, .22 LR caliber, SN 01947, 6" barrel.

Here is a Mod 60 in the same auction that they didn't pull the Target grips off of to get the real serial number:

Smith & Wesson, Model 60, Double Action Revolver, .38 SPL caliber, SN 02176, stainless finish, 2" ba

Using assembly numbers in error instead of the proper serial number is a constant horribly common problem with S&W revolvers. Doesn’t surprise me some dealers or auctions houses would do this too. I once had a long time experienced shooter try to use the part number on a GI 1911 replacement slide as a serial number

Thanks for the input. For some reason, assembly number never occurred to me. Probably explains why, when I asked if numbers matched and to provide photos, he responded he would follow up and never did.

Just a glimpse of that gun and I would believe it’s worth 3k if the right person engraved it more! If it truly is a club gun much more. Sorry if I always look at the glass as half empty!

I was contacted about this gun. It was the assembly number that was listed.
I can't tell you how many History letter requests we get where the person used the assembly number instead of the serial number. Here is a picture of a real K frame Club Gun. Serial number is K0482. It was a Christmas present for a friend of Smith & Wesson

Hey Don, when did the Club Gun numbers end? I had heard they went into early post-war era, but what is the latest one out there??

I don't have the last number right now, but they went in the late 1970's. Lee Deters had a Model 916 Club Gun. I just got a Model 41 Tool Room gun, serial number T1004, that was later given to Wally Thompkins in June 5, 1976 as a Club Gun.

Some initial info here: "Club Gun" - what is the over view of these?

Lots more available in the forum archive: See the "Search" link in very top menu row of any forum page.

Hey, this could work out well for C&R collectors. The assembly numbers are usually low, 5 digits or less, so just send out ship dates to the auctioneer based on those numbers and get the gun delivered to your door!
