There weren’t any model numbers back then but it probably was an m&p which became the model 10 or a chiefs special which became the model 36

Does the cylinder hold 5 or 6 rounds? Got a camera on your phone?

Well camera or no camera, the 6 shot will be an M&P, the 5 shot the Chiefs Special---------------or a Centennial (the so-called "hammerless) version) or a Bodyguard (with a partially enclosed hammer) ----IF either or both happened to be available at the time.
Ralph Tremaine
And the "M&P" real name is Military & Police model.

Thanks for the quick replies, no wonder I can't find a model number since it didn't exist. I guess it would have had just a serial number on it. I don't know if it was a 5 or 6 shot but looking at some of the early models I've checked out I'm going to assume it was a 5 shot. Just thought I would try to find one like it.

You didn't state the caliber. .38 Special? A picture would help as there are several possibilities.

I don't have the gun or a pic of it other than what memory I have. Just ben thinking about buying somethig like what he had and best I can remember he got it in 1954 or 55. I'm pretty sure it was a chiefs special so I guess I'm looking for a blued model pre 10 chiefs special 5 shot 38 special.
