Default A "New" 2 Inch Victory Surfaces

Gentlemen:

These guns are so scarce that they excite a lot of collectors when one comes in from the cold.

This one, serialed V649519, was brought to my attention by fellow Forum Member and SWCA'er FlaDiverBrad for inclusion into the Victory Model Database. It is a new addition to the Database. Brad noticed it on a Facebook posting and knew that it should become a Database entry. The owner indicated that it was a pawnshop find.

Unfortunately, like so many of these 2 inchers, it has been substantially modified as can be seen in the photos. Heavily buffed and refinished to nickel, smooth walnut stocks replaced with rubbers, and the lanyard ring has been removed and the hole plugged.

This gun appears to me to be a legitimate 2 inch Victory. It is not a USGI gun. Rather, it falls into the serial number range of that group of 2 inchers that were shipped under DSC authorization in late 1944. Most of those guns went to law enforcement agencies. Quite a few of them have turned up with refinish jobs in nickel.

It is a shame that this one also received that kind of treatment. Doing so has heavily damaged the value of the gun as a collectible gun. That was probably not even a remote concern of the owner who had that work done, probably in the late 1940s or '50s.

Even in this condition it is an interesting find, and one that Victory collectors should enjoy hearing about. Thanks again to Brad for bringing this one to my attention.

That's a shame. Or an April Fools joke. Or both. Thanks for posting it.

I once ran across a pre-war M&P snubby which had received the same degree of non-factory plating and general abuse. It looked worse than that Victory snubby.

The nickle plating doesn't surprise me, but the level of incompetence of the "polishing" does how anyone could make a living, or keep a job doing this kind of work is truly amazing to me.

"Incompetence ?" That's obviously one of then better jobs done as by Jose's Bumper Shop on Avenida Revolution in TiJuana, Mexico. Jose polishing and plating skills are exceeded by no hombre! Ed.

I thought the nickel ones were for Officers?
That's the gun show line I always get.

The job went to the lowest bidder.

One buddy who was a bit sharp on a trade; God rest his soul now; sold a nickle plated Remington Rand 1911 A1 to a feller, and claimed it was special order for the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
