Trying to help a buddy out and ID this revolver. From what I can see in the pics it looks like a model 10 to me, but it's not stamped behind the yoke. The only thing there is a stamping that looks like G1? Here are all the pics he sent me.

It's a 1948 M&P, too early to be a Model 10 (which didn't appear until the late 50s) but would be a pre-Model 10.
Indeed, four-digit C prefix, so 1948. As far as one can tell from these photos, the gun looks to be in rough shape, and not so much from use, but basic neglect. Tell your buddy to put some time and effort into cleaning
