Default An interesting grip variant, unless I am mistaken.

I have only seen one gun equipped with both Magnas and a S&W grip adapter, and that is General Patton's, which as noted, had some material added behind the ears of the grip to fill in the gap.

I got this in from an auction today, on an 8-3/4" nonregistered Magnum, and am curious. I don't have a screwdriver handy to pull the grips off. I wonder, if you could order a gun from S&W with both Magnas and the grip adapter in place, and have them fit right (like this)?

I am not 100% certain, but I think some time ago a member here posted his RM with additional paperwork from the SWHF which included the invoice showing the grip adaptor. That would indicate it was factory-installed, in which case a gun like this would not ship unless they’d been fitted properly. You might try a forum search.

The .357 Magnum order form stated the grip adapter cannot be used with Magna stocks. However, Magna stocks can be modified to be mounted on a revolver with a grip adapter. I have seen a couple over the years.

Didn’t someone find a set of magnas that we’re thinner and it was determined they were probably shaved down to accommodate a grip adapter?

Edit: found the thread:
trashed Pre War K Magnas, or so I thought

I don’t have any indication they are the original grips, so maybe anything goes. I had wondered if someone had maybe thinned the grip frame but that doesn’t appear to be the case. A pretty neat setup really ...

I am pretty sure that at least a few guns have lettered with magnas and an adapter. I have a vague recollection of a K-22 Outdoorsman that I think lettered, and I think at least two Reg Mags. I have seen and handled those three guns.
They simply sanded the backs of the grips down on a belt sander. So much is taken off that it takes a good amount off the washer.

Is there not an old adage that says, never discredit things that the factory
did upon request? After all, they were selling guns and wanted repeat
customers.

Congratulations on the NRM. When you have time, would love to see pics of grips inside as well as NRM! I would think if the factory did it, they would be sn'd to the gun. The invoice below shows that as being "Special". Unfortunately, the original grips were missing.

Lee is right, as always. I have copies of a few letters that show guns shipped with Magna grips and the grip adapter.

Kevin, could we see a copy of one or more of the letters you are referring to?

This is a poor copy but mentions both Magna grips and the adapter.

Kevin...I agree some .357 Magnums were shipped with Magna stocks and the grip adapter unattached. I have seen that on a few invoices and order forms. That is what the letter you have indicates (at least to me).

My 1940 Stoeger "Shooters Bible" has S&W Grip Adapters.

"This Adapter consists of the two plates which fit directly on either side of the tangs, a rubber filler piece which provides support for the middle finger, and serves to widen the stock 1/8"." Price....$2.50

Below that listing is S&W Magna Stock.

" This stock is designed for the particular purpose of distributing the recoil of the tremendously powerful S&W .357 Magnum cartridge over the greatest possible area of the hand and to provide a full comfortable and secure grasp of the arm.
The Magna stock is now standard equipment for the .357 Magnum revolver.
The Magna stock is also supplied for our .45 Government Model of 1917, .44 Military, .44 Model of 1926, 38/44 Heavy Duty and Outdoorsman revolvers. .38 M&P, and K-22 Price.....$2.50

I have never seen any of the sanded down magnas that were numbered. If you recall, grips do not fit grip adapters precisely- the adapter plates are larger than the grips and protrude slightly.
