Need date on M&P Target 38special. 6404xx. ;

A little more info AND PHOTOS would be very helpful. There is a fair chance it dates to shortly before WWII.

s/n 6408xx (a target model) shipped 2/32.

Another target model s/n 6427xx shipped 5/33.

I guessing yours shipped in 1932 but it is possible in shipped in 1931.

That SN would date its shipment from 1932 to perhaps as late as 1939. Getting an exact shipping date for a Depression-era S&W gun is not possible unless you want to part with $100 for a historical letter. That is because many guns sat on a S&W inventory shelf, sometimes for years, before shipment. But it is likely yours was manufactured in 1931-32. It seems that the target model M&Ps probably left the factory shelf more quickly than the much more numerous ordinary models, but you can't bet on an early shipment.

I haven't been keeping track of these, but this is almost certainly as close as I've come to one of these since forever.
