New in box circa 1956 44 mag S-174411
I am looking for a value on a S&W 44 mag new in box with original sales receipt from 1958 - never been fired.
6" blue barrel
Serial number is S-174411
IMG_0945.jpg
I inherited this from my father in Alaska and will be moving overseas so I need to liquidate my firearm collection.
Can anyone give me a estimated value of this piece?

This is why I tell people not to leave guns to their kids.

I'm not qualified to value it in $, but it's a bunch!!
Just Wow!!
Can't you store it and the rest of the collection for safekeeping until you return?
You're not likely to find another one like that, and it was your father's.

Welcome to the forum and what an entrance. I wouldn't know where to start on value, but those that are in the know will be along. Outstanding gun.

Absolutely irreplaceable. Unless you have zero kids and will never come back to the US, I'd put it in a bank vault and leave it there. Give your kids the key and be done with it.

Five figures I'd guess. The problem is that you have one post here, same is true if you tried to sell on Gun Broker. Your best option might be to assign it to a gun auction house.

Welcome!!
Whatever you have for firearms I would be willing to bet this is the centerpiece. I can't guess what the value is but 10K+ would not surprise me.
I am sure Doc 44 will be along with an estimate. I would also be asking the question of private sale vs. a specialized firearms auction house.
EDIT: Looks like I may have missed on my price guess

One slight detail:
That looks like a 6 1/2 inch barrel to me.
Some collector would love to get it. Sorry I can't help with value.

Are you sure it's never been fired, (do you know how to tell) with the ammo stored with it and the mop looks to have been used I wonder. Just saying...……………………………………..M*

Hmmm..... A couple of days ago we had a first-time poster with a registered magnum package and now this pre-29 package from another first-time poster. Are we building towards an April-fools-day joke here from the moderators or someone?
Even so, those are nice guns that someone owns.

It’s a 4-screw frame. I’d think closer to $3500, but nothing surprises me these days. Doc will know...

I agree with this 100%. Although the value now, whatever it ends up being, will be a chunk of change, it will only increase with time. Aside from the money factor, if you have any interest in firearms at all this will be something you will probably regret selling.

I'd put it in the $3500 - 4000 range. It is the most common barrel engh, and the rarer, earlier 5 screw model brings more. Also, prices have seemed to soften in the past year. However, condition is king. If it really is unfired with no turn line on the cylinder it would bring an addition premium.

Your 44 Magnum was shipped in December 1957, so it is a late second year revolver. I assume it has a 4-screw frame (the large, upper side plate screw being absent) and no model number. The accessories are correct except for the sight screw driver which should have a knurled aluminum handle (the all steel sight screw driver finished in black oxide was basically discontinued by the end of 1955). The presentation case looks to be in good shape although the piece of material connecting the top and bottom halves of the case at the back is missing. I only point out these relative minor issues to be helpful, not critical. The 44 Magnum is in great condition from what I can see.
I would value the "package" at $3,500.
