I am going to buy one of the Standard Catalogs of Smith & Wesson. I mainly deal with 5 screws but also revolvers into the 1980's. Does the 4th Edition include all of the 3d edition plus some?

I ask because I had 3 editions of Bolt Action Rifles by Frank DeHaas and got rid of the 2d and 3d because I didn't like them as well as the First.

The 3d edition of the Std Cat of S&W has much better write-ups as to it's content than the 4th Edition does at the various book selling sites. Which do folks recommend?

I own 2nd, 3rd and 4 edition. Today, I only use the 4th and don't see anything that was left ou information wise with the 4th having the benefit of updates/dorrections found by thousands of users. JMHO

The Standard Catalog of S&W but Supica and Nahas is the finest book on S&W that has the majority of all the info you'd ever need between one set of covers (in one book). Prior to that you'd need several book, knowing where to look, peck and hunt for the data you were searching for.

Editions 1, 2, 3, and 4 are NOT different books. It is the same book, revised and further updated with each Edition.

I suggest you find a SCS&W #4 as it is the most recent.

Best is to purchase Smith & Wesson 1857-1945 by Neal & Jinks first. Very detailed information on 5 screws up to WWII era. If values or post-war guns are needed, get the SCSW4. It is the best edition out there. Better yet, get both!

I have to agree with Sal. I'm trying to find all four editions (I now have three) but in most cases things that are in the earlier editions but not the later ones are likely to be errors that were corrected. I'm just a cumulative kind of guy, but unlike some books that are rereleased, SCSW seems to keep all of the good material from previous editions and just keep adding newly discovered information as it is uncovered.

I do agree that the Neal and Jinks book would also be worthwhile to get as well as the one by Roper, but if I could only have one it would be the newest edition of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson. JMHO, YMMV of course.

I have one of these, in German, too. And ... I have one of the very few printed upside down. Printing error of which were sent back and destroyed. Very few of the upside down printed versions were held out.

A few 1st versions, a few 2nd versions, etc.

Then I have a normal USA issue, double signed by Roy Jinks and Robert Neal which is quite odd as Robert Neal rarely signed. Sal

I haven‘t compared reviews, but that may be simply because everybody who is going to do a good review isn‘t going to do another one if he already reviewed the substantially same book‘s earlier edition, and more nitpickers with an axe to grind may write about the later edition. Just a suspicion.

Well, I guess I must be special.. I got Bob Neal's signature shortly after I picked up the book. (He was at one of our local gunshows).
Roy signed it for me at one of the symposiums (Boise?? Maybe)


The reason I bought it the first place was that, at the time, originals were selling for big bucks and the reprints weren't available. All of he tables, production data, dates, etc were still readable in English and with my handy German/English dictionary I could winkle out some of the other information.

You certainly are someone special ! The original Neal & Jinks books, in English, was long out of print. The price on a used Neal & Jinks had gone upwards of $100.00 (back in the 1990s) A lot of $ for a book, back then but Colt or Winchester collectors happily plopped down $150 or more for some of the key Winchester and Colt books without flinching.

There was the original 1966 print then the revised 1975 (?) if I recall correctly ?

Somehow, someway, Roy and or Roy & Robert let the copyright expire, then R&R reprinted them in the 1996 (or thereabout). I must have sold 40 or 50 of the reprints as they were more affordable. I sold the reprints at my dead cost just that I could help get the S&W word ... OUT there.

Seemed it was mostly a Colt world back at that time, other then us tight-knit S&W collectors, I felt as though I had to teach S&W in order to sell a few S&W revolvers to someone unfamiliar with S&W. (which I sold very few because I like them all ).
