Default Help dating a .455 hand ejector

a friend has just got a hand ejector in .455 serial 591**.
Could somebody give me some idea of the date of manufacture, or any other information
Sorry I do not have any pictures

Most of the 2nd Model HE MKIIs were made during WW1 although a few came later. 59000 is fairly late in the manufacturing I think (I have 29XXX which I show as 1916) so maybe 1917. There is a great deal of information about these in previous posts if you use the "search" button at the top of the page. Here's a picture of one of mine, the one you're asking about probably looks a lot like it.

My .455 Second Model was 35711 and it was shipped in January 1916 so yours is probably a 1916 mfg.

455-2nd contract guns were produced from Jan, 1915 to Sept, 1916.

52908 - shipped April 1916
58547 - 455 stamped. shipped May 1916
59045 - 455 stamped. shipped May 1916

My Second Model .455 HE is s/n 69234.

It never made it to the war and mustered out of the S&W inventory to Shapleigh Hardware in December 1917.

The good part is, it remains in superb condition. Have a look at this thread I posted way back in 2011: S&W .455 Mk. II Hand Ejector 2nd Model #69234
