I just recalled two more grail guns. The first, a Remington Nylon 66, I lusted after for more than 3 decades:

I don't shoot it but I will, someday. I'm just happy to have it.

The other is a customized/sporterized 98 Mauser. This one started out as a Yugoslavian 8mm Mauser and was reborn as a lovely .35 Whelen hunting rifle:

I had a Grail Gun: It was a 3 inch Model 65 or 13. I got a 3 inch Model 65, and it was stolen around 1995. I managed to replace it with a 3 inch Model 13-3. Recently, I gave it to my son-in-law.

Now, I think a shooter grade 4 inch Heavy Duty would be about right.

I'd like both a Registered Magnum (any, but would really love a rare barrel length) and a Colt New Service .357 with target sights.

I guess my definition of a "grail gun" is a gun model that I would very much like to own, but it is very difficult to find in the condition and/or price range that I could justify paying. With that said, my current grail guns are:
1.) .44 HE 1st Model (Triple-lock), blued, 6-1/2" bbl. in VG condition
2.) .357 Registered Magnum, blued, bbl length doesn't matter, VG condition and maybe engraved
3.) A birth year (1954) .357 Magnum, blued, 5" bbl, VG
4.) Colt SAA 1st gen., .45 Colt, nickel, bbl. length doesn't matter, VG

It's quite a shopping list. If I happened upon one or more of these fine revolvers, my retirement plans definitely would be put on the back burner for a while...and maybe my marriage too!

Got an email asking for pictures, so here goes. Three on left are collectibles; Top is first year M1911 to Navy then Registered Magnum #122 then pre-27 Pinto.

Middle is the shootables: top is modified M57 with 5" barrel and hard chrome finish then bottom is Remington Rand with Colt hard slide.

Selfish people have my grail gun. A high condition 1905 HE last change in 32/20 Target. That and nice 405 m95 Win original and you can punch my ticket.

In this category, a 5” Model 29 shipped to HH Harris in Chicago. Just like the one Henry Bowman had in Unintended Consequences.

Wink You might be surprised

Strange as it might sound, my last was a model 65 w/3" barrel. They may be plentiful where you are but around here they don't exist and the online prices were outrageous. Found one locally at a decent price just before Christmas. Next want (that I can't possible afford) is a 27-2 with a 3" barrel and nice bluing.

*Forgot to add- rubiranch you make me very jealous when I see your guns!

I'm with you on a 3" Model 19 as being my grail gun. A beautiful one came up on Gun Broker a few months back. ANIB with all the paperwork, etc. When the bidding went north of $5K I realized that I was out of my league. I bought one of the 66-3 three inch guns new when they came out and am glad I did. For now I have to settle with my Pre-Model 29, 4" which was shipped the month and year I was born - July '57.

Managed to obtain my grail gun. I am very, very, appreciative to the member who let me acquire it, and it began my slide down a slippery slope.

Now for that slippery slope!

Don't know if the factory actually turned out one, but I've long wished for a 4-inch Triple Lock in .38-40 Winchester.

Well ... face it. I'd take any N-Frame Smith & Wesson factory chambered for .38-40.

When it comes to grail guns, I have acquired a few of mine over the years, but this Phil Quigley-engraved, Keith Brown-stocked, Marvin Huey-cased set is one of the last ones I would part with if I was ever required to sell my collection...

Unbelievable set. I’m not asking what you paid or what they’re worth; but if a group of wealthy gun lovers were at an auction and these came up, what is a crazy - but possible - price that might be paid for this one-of-a-kind offering? Thanks

My grail gun is my little Post Office M&P .22 Long Rifle. It took a lot of looking to find one that fit my budget by being an honest to goodness shooter.

I would like a Springfield Model 1922 in 22 LR. I have one, built in 1922, that has been worked over to 22 Hornet and would like a mate in Long Rifle.

For S&W, I guess my grail would be a 1950 Target Model in 45 ACP. Might even trade my 38 HD for it!

My grail guns have changed over the years, and almost all of them I have been able to get.
The one that has eluded me and probably will never come to be, is a Triple Lock in 44-40. I have triple locks, even a target with 5" barrel, but I have never even seen a TL in 44-40 for sale before, ever.

I saw one of my grail guns several years back at the Louisville Gun Show. A guy had a table with only one gun on it, and it wasn't even put together! That's cause it was laying in its oak and leather case. It was a Royal Grade H&H double in .577 NE, hand detachable side locks, 3 Leaf Rear, Gold bead front (as in GOLD) with a huge flip up ivory night bead, fully engraved, gold inlaid elephants, brand new, all accoutrements like the ivory handled turnscrews, oil bottle, cleaning rod, etc, etc were present. I actually thought it was priced reasonably at $100,000.
He wouldn't take my check.

(I didn't really offer to buy it- couldn't)

Hmmmmm, do I have a grail gun. Tom Brady was once asked " which is your favorite super bowl ring" ? His answer, " The next one."

Guess i would have the same answer for my grail gun

I've had several "grail guns" over the years, but if I had to choose just one, it would be this one; the Quiet Special Purpose Revolver (QSPR) or Tunnel Gun. Having a Spec Ops, Military background has always drawn me to S&W pistols and revolvers used in war. The Model 29 Tunnel Gun was designed to be used in the war of my generation, Viet Nam. I guess where the grail part of this revolver,(frame only in actuality), comes to mind is what it represented to the US tunnel rats who were just trying to survive that one year "in country" before they could get back home to a country they loved, but sadly, didn't love them; survival in the dangerous Viet Cong tunnels of Viet Nam. I've had many "safe queen" S&W revolvers in almost 50 years of chasing S&Ws, but none as meaningful to me as this one. Grail is a big word that should fit a one of a kind, unique gun. To me, this gun fits all that and more.
Chuck

Not sure if this qualifies as a grail gun but it's important to me. I had it, then sold it. What I did not know was that it was not easily replaced. It took many years to get it back. Prewar .44 HE 3rd Model 4" shipped to Wolf & Klar in 1938. In the first photo it's wearing period magnas that are just a tad proud, second photo she's wearing service stocks that fit like a glove.

That's awesome that you got it back.

I don't think I've ever had a "grail" gun according the definition of "grail".

I have a few that are my favorites and a couple with some sentimental value.

I parted with about 1/2 of my collection over the last year. A few exceptionally nice ones.

I might part with a few more just keeping my favorites.

I guess where the grail part of this revolver,(frame only in actuality), comes to mind is what it represented to the US tunnel rats who were just trying to survive that one year "in country" before they could get back home to a country they loved, but sadly, didn't love them; survival in the dangerous enemy tunnels of Viet Nam. I've had many "safe queen" S&W revolvers in almost 50 years of chasing S&Ws, but none as meaningful to me as this one. Grail is a big word that should fit a one of a kind, unique gun. To me, this gun fits all that and more.

That is one awesome handgun.
Good on you Chuck.

My bucket list number one grail gun is a s&w m29-10 6.5” barrel in 44 mag in nickel finish.

Not really. I'd like to have a Model 45 but when I see one I can't bring myself to pay the asking price. Just not important enough to me.

I'd sort of like to have a Colt SAA in 32-20. But given what they bring these days, it won't happen.

My fantasy gun would be the 1906 Sears Colt SAA. Most beautiful pistol I have ever seen.

Not a real Grail Gun, but one of my favorites. 1-1926 round butt M&P. Classic lines, much more so than a square butt. Big Larry

Not any more. When I was younger there were guns that called to me like sirens on the shore.
After 40 years of buying, selling, trading and collecting guns I have found that the attention catchers are much like the pretty girl in school. Usually turned out I liked the idea of them far more than spending time with them.
I still admire the upper tier collector guns, but I won’t spend the money it takes to own them.
