Model 1905 4th Change, age and finish question?
This is my oldest Smith & Wesson, which I understand is from the mid-20’s, a 1905 4th Change Model. I bought it from a Pawn Shop in 2005 for $200 bucks as it was marked as a Model 14 (?). Even as a novice, I knew that wasn’t correct, but unsure as to what it was, I still bought it. Members here identified it for me back then and although it’s shown here with refinished period stocks, I bought it wearing a set of modern non-Diamond Magnas. I found a worn set of stocks for $5 dollars at a Phoenix gun show and a very cool senior member of this forum from the North East part of our nation did me a favor with a swap of the old ones for what you see in the pics! I’m assuming because of the fine finish and the * (star) stamping on the butt it made a trip back to the factory for some reason, likely a refinish occurred then. I’d like to update my records and with 15 years in the rear view mirror, I’d appreciate a current opinion as to possible shipping date and the finish, i.e. refinished or not. Here’s what is on the butt of the gun: 4879XX, followed by a *. Any information is much appreciated and all comments are welcomed!

Late 1924, early 1925 is as close as I can get you.
The closest I own to your is 4537xx and it shipped 9/24. But it is Nickel and S&W did not ship in s/n order. Nickel prob didn't fly off the shelf like blue finish would have.

I think it was refinished after the factory as well. The hammer appears to be polished and the trigger appears to be blued, both wrong and something the factory would never do. Both were finished in case coloring originally, so something happened to the revolver since its factory visit?? Probably never know the story, but for the money you can't go wrong for a shooter. It will most likely function just as well as when it was brand new.
