Looking for some information
I hope I can find out some info about this old S&W... .38 special,  Serial number is 593xxx and the last patent date on the barrel is 1914... what would the model be, and about how old is it.... I was told that some of these old guns were not safe with modern ammo, something about cylinders.... any info would be very appreciated....

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
You did not mention the cartridge this revolver is designed to shoot, but I'll assume it is a .38 Special. In that case, it would be a .38 Military & Police revolver from about 1926.
That last patent date on the barrel should be December 29, 1914. The right side of the frame should say, Made in U.S.A. If the stocks are original, they should be checkered walnut with no medallion in the stock circle.
Assuming everything is in worker order, your revolver will be fine with any modern .38 Special ammo, although most people will caution you against using +P rounds in it.

Thanks for the reply.... I was trying to edit the post and supply a picture, but got hung up.... .38 special, 6 inch barrel.... still having trouble with the picture..... walnut grips, checkered with no medalians….. will try to figure out how to post a picture...

My guess is a mid 1920s Military & Police Model. Forerunner to the 1957 Model 10. K frame, square butt, given the metallurgy at the time I would probably stick with standard loads.

SN 593xxx suggests that M&P probably shipped 1928-29. Grips on it are correct for that period, but may have been refinished. The gun's finish may not be original, but difficult to tell. Any .38 Special ammunition will be OK, but wouldn't recommend using +P.

a lot of people will use 158 grain round nose lead rounds in revolvers of that age since it was what it was designed around.
