I have recently acquired a new to me Smith & Wesson 22 revolver ctg, to the best of my knowledge this gun does not have a model number and the serial number is real low 149 XX. I do not know what year this gun was made, or what it was called. Any info you might have would be greatly appreciated. (Is driving me crazy) the gun is in very good shape, I had one friend tell me that the gun was made in the 1980s but had another tell me it was 1910 to 1921 again any help would be appreciated, also I am to this forum and haven't figured out how to put pictures on this post if someone could help me with that

Welcome to the Forum; lots of good information here. We need a better description of your revolver and/or pictures. There's a sticky, I think, explaining how to post pictures but I don't remember where it is. Here's a quick explanation of one way:

Transfer picture from camera to computer (I use my "desk top" as a temporary destination. Open a new post (or reply) and click on the "Go Advanced" box below the message window. That will open another window below your message window, and click on "Manage Attachments." That will take you to another window allowing you to select the picture you want, then click "upload" and once it is loaded, click "close this window" at the top. Then click "submit reply" and your picture and message/reply should post.

Or give us a detailed description of the revolver; blue? nickel? stainless? barrel length? Six/five/eight shot? SN on butt (include any letters that might be there such as a K), caliber stamp on barrel, and anything else of interest you note. If there is a model number you should see it on the frame when you open the cylinder.

Good luck.

Jeff

It has a three and a half inch barrel, stamped 22 long, serial number is the same on butt , cylinder, and Barrel it is blued, the only other number right above the cylinder hinge there is a Y down below it 15555, I was told this was not a Smith & Wesson number. However I do not know

Does it look like one of these? These are J Frames .22's, MOdel 34 and 63.

This one is larger, and is a K Frame .22.

Welcome to the Forum.

Sounds like an Airweight Kit Gun to me. When model numbers were assigned, it became the Model 43.

Are you sure it isn't stamped ".22 Long Rifle"?

Yes it is stamped long rifle ,sorry the cylinder release button has the screw in the middle of it instead of towards end or front of it.the Smith & Wesson stamp is on the left side of the gun just under the cylinder release button, and on the right side is 4 line address stamp. And it looks like 2 pins just under the rear adjustable sight instead of screws and the adjustable rear sight has a screw on each side

Does it look like this one? This is a Model of 1953 with SN 13357 from 1955 (model numbers started in 1957/58 and this one became the Model 34).

Yes it does , this is my first day on the Forum so I don't know if this is out of line but I can email them if that's doable. And maybe if it's not too much trouble upload them for me. I'm just working out in the field a long ways from computer. You may have just ended a three-day search I hope!!!!!
Thanks

As stated above a Model of 1953 that probably shipped around 1954-55.

You have a .22 Kit Gun with a square butt. If the frame is aluminum, it is an airweight. You can check it with a magnet. I can't read what is stamped on the barrel.

Thanks merl67 and muleyGil, I did try your advice with a magnet and it did not stick to the frame or the. Cylinder, so I guess I learned something new!!

Yes, it is an Airweight Kit Gun. I don't have the serial number reference handy but it likely dates to the late 1950s.

The markings on the yoke cutout (Y and 15555) are factory internal codes placed during the assembly process; they have no meaning after the gun is finished, except if the parts are original you will see the 15555 stamped on other parts of the gun.

How is it for can plinking?

And the barrel is 4". You measure from the face of the cylinder, not the front of the frame.

Actually, .22/32 Airweight Kit Guns have 3.5" barrels. The loss of the 0.5" from the steel Kit Gun really makes them float.

Again I AM not a expert just excited and trying to read up on it, l appreciate everyone's feedback

Where I shop I would expect to see it priced at $500-$600 and maybe buy it at $450-$500. I paid for $460 for the one in post #11 four or five years ago.

No, mine is the steel version which became the M34. On the positive side these aren't seen for sale all that often, on the negative side the finish on the aluminum frame/cylinders is relatively fragile; yours shows fairly typical wear patterns for them. While I paid $460 for the one shown above, I paid $600 about ten years ago for this 98+% Model 43.

You actually have a "Model of 1955 .22/32 Airweight Kit Gun " (Pre Model 43) and it's built on the J frame, slightly longer than the Model of 1953 built on the NEW I Frame (until 1960 when it became a J frame, the Model 34-1), all steel Kit Gun (later became the Model 34). Your # 14938 very likely was shipped in the 2nd half of 1955.

The Airweight only had 3 1/2" barrel and square grip frame, with few rare exceptions.

In the condition of yours, these generally are for sale in the $800 range because they're hard to find without wear on the aluminum frame and cyl, especially the edges. The finish on the alum alloy parts is not as durable as blued steel.
What did you pay for it?

Congrats, you got a winner! Enjoy.

Thanks, I just love all this info. I pd. 300.00 with the old holster. Purchased a really good condition 1966 Winchester 94 3030 looked like it had only been shot a couple times for 400.00 at the same time.that may be a little high, but always wanted one.and had never seen one in that condition for sale. I am really looking forward to shooting the 22.
