K22 Outdoorsman - Ever buy gun for Box?
Approx. 6 months ago I purchased a K22 Outdoorsman off Gunbroker. It was advertised a being an Early K22 with no mention of being an Outdoorsman.
Fast forward to a week ago...While using my (Secret?) GB search, I came upon a "Buy it Now" advertised Smith & Wesson K22 & Box. As I viewed the auction pictures I quickly realized the box was not for the auction advertised 1948'ish K22 (SN# K 53693) but actually for an earlier Outdoorsman. Since I can always use another K22, I immediately hit the buy now button. Auction Link: Smith &Wesson K 22 Box - Revolvers at GunBroker.com : 868178125
I now have a box for my Outdoorsman (SN# 675229) and own another nice fun-shooting K22 Masterpiece. Since the OD box and revolver are in average condition, maybe they are meant for each other.
Attached are pictures of Outdoorsman (left) and later model K22 (right).
Thanks for opportunity to share my latest combo. As always, positive or negative comments welcomed.
Ray

Here are some pictures of the Outdoorman box. Tape on box botton serial number starts with 65. Can make out remainder of number.

Good job - good deal on the pistol and the box. Having an outdoorsman with no box myself, I wish I'd have seen that.

Few months back, I bought a real nice 22 Outdoorsman. The box was $400 extra and was numbered to the gun. The revolver and box cost me $850. A great price, and the box is not smashed up or worn badly. Alas, no tools. Big Larry

Here is closeup picture of tape on bottom of box showing first two digits being 65. I don't see other grease pen numbers on bottom so I'm guessing this is how boxes were numbered. Maybe someone will verify if this is how factory numbered these OD boxes.

That is definitely how they were numbered during that time. There are 2 problems with that method. The first one is what you have. The numbers wear off of the tape. The second problem is the piece of tape can obviously peel off the box. This happens a lot too. You definitely got a great deal. To me, you either got a free gun and paid for the box, or got a free box and paid for the gun. Thanks for sharing.

Double your pleasure and double the value of your purchase immediately! Good thing you did not ask any questions on this Forum about the gun during the auction or that lot would have sold after a dozen bids or more!!
