Default Didn't Expect to Find a Time Capsule Today

With this pandemic thing it has been pretty slow looking for interesting S&Ws. Finally got by the local Cabelas today although didn't really expect to find much; mostly needed some 9mm bullets for reloading of which they had none.

Went by the Gun Library and was surprised to find four or five engraved S&Ws, a couple of 25-5s, a 2.5 inch 66-1, a 17, a couple 48s and more. The engraved guns had no information as to the engraver and didn't "speak to me" as RKMesa says they should if you're going to buy one. The last thing to catch my eye on the bottom shelf was an M&P with box. Not really even a turn line, can't imagine where its been all these years. SN is 452510, I've asked Roy for a ship date but if anyone has numbers close that would be interesting. There is a date stamp under the SN on the bottom of the box which appears to be September 22, 1923 although I thought the SN was more in the mid 1920's range.

Anyway, surprised to find it, not sure I've ever seen one almost 100 years old that looks like it just left the factory.

I have one that is not quiet as nice as your example. I acquired it last July. It is SN: 373350 and did not come with a box. I was rather pleased for a piddling $375.00. I have it as a March 1921 production. I think someone on this Forum provided the production date.

My photography skills are also not up to your standards.

Supernice! Somewhere around here I have boxed M&P of similar era in almost that good a condition, but without even looking I know yours is the better specimen. Congratulations on the score!

Thank you for the info; that makes the September 22, 1923 date quite possible.

It is possible. I have one M&P in the low 400K range in near pristine condition, except for one small scratch. But no box.

What a pleasure to see this old guy in the condition it came in originally. No wonder this is a revered gun. Mine are all shooters and it is cool to know they once looked like this! Thanks

A .38 M & P about 7000 numbers higher shipped in 3/1923, so any time +/- 6 months from then is possible for yours. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for posting your good photographs of that M&P and the box.

So that's what they looked like new in the gun shop back in the 1920s?

Yummy!

506827 has lived here for many years. It's nice, but it isn't stinkin' new looking like that one.

Thanks, I did hear back from Roy and he confirmed the September 1923 ship date for this one. Now I'm curious about the date stamp on the box, whether it was put there by the factory (did the factory ever date stamp boxes?) or perhaps by whatever wholesaler/retailer received it.

Great gun! There are three 453,XXX 38 M&Ps in the SWCA database and all three shipped in September, 1923.

Default 22hipower, not many of those left....

At least not in the places I'm able to visit in this area. Aren't you glad you wondered out and found a super surprise? I'm sure that I've only seen things like that during our symposiums, nice find.

Would you happen remember the asking price on the short barrel M-66-1? Thanks!

The 66-1 was $699, with Pachmayrs and a few "rub" marks but pretty nice. Probably should have bought that too as they were negotiating prices a bit; could have gotten it for $599 I think. Got sidetracked though by one of the "other guys" guns and didn't get back to the 66-1. Don't suppose I should show that one here but maybe I can sneak in one picture without getting in too much trouble; a Colt Army Special in 32-20 from 1924 also with its original box.

The closest serial number I have is 393xx, taken by Doug Wesson 12/6/1921. He ordered it as a gift to his hunting guide in Maine, Ira McKay. First picture is the left side of the gun.

The second picture is a closeup of Ira McKay's name on the left side.

The last picture is the right side of the gun.

Regards, Mike Priwer

Mike, really nice and great history; what a special revolver that is. Doesn't look like the guide took it with him on too many hunts. Thanks for sharing it.

That looks incredible! Thanks for sharing.

Could someone tell me what that hole is for under the thumb piece?

I am sure it is for an internal component. I just don't know what exactly.

My 1917 gun isn't quite as nice (a couple scuffs) but it's still fun and exciting to find one this old in such shape. One result of its not-quite-perfect condition is that it gets shot with no regret.
