My search for a pre 27 has ended!
Have been looking for a blued 3.5” for a while. They aren’t plentiful or cheap! But the stars finally aligned and will have it in my hands by end of the week. I plan to letter it but for now am wondering if anyone can get close on a ship date for me? Thanks in advance!

I have a 5 inch (S151820) that I show as 1955. I think ship dates vary widely with these though so you will need a letter, or if you join the SWCA the good Mr. Jinks will give you the ship date for free.
Very nice gun, you were fortunate to find it with the box. Here's the 5 inch.

Almost certainly 1955-56 but possibly as late as 1957. As said previously, SNs track poorly with shipping dates at this time, and a letter is the only way to tell for sure.

Congrats. And yes they are pricey.
I recently sold my 3.5" 357 Magnum SN S150XXX. It was shipped 8-15-1955.
My 4' pre, SN 168XXX shipped May 1957. (also sold)

Pre 27
Congratulations!
That is a beautiful pistol and you'll never have to think about upgrading. S&W was doing amazing work in those days and now you will have an example that you can spend hours admiring. Well done.

What a beauty, congrats. I’ve been looking for one to go with my 1956 K17 and K38, both from 1956. Every one I’ve found would require a second mortgage though.

Stocks look pretty but are too big on the short barrel IMO. These came with Magnas and the Targets were likely added by a previous owner or maybe were dealer installed at purchase. I bet a letter would say it shipped with Magnas but they could have been factory installed.
Very nice. Mine were easier to find because none were collector grade.

I'll give you 100 Real American dollars for the box and brochure to offset you purchase LOL.
Seriously I was lucky/fortunate to aquire my exc orig finish '53 pre 27 3.5 for about 30 to 40% < than yours around Christmas from orig owner gun on consignment. Minus the box. As I told myself when buying, not making these anymore and you got a real jewel there to be very proud of. So, in closing, congrats and I have the orig brochure, now how bout that box?
Happy Hunting J R...

What I do, and it may be completely wrong, is if the metal corners on the box are made using 4 circles, then the gun shipped with magna grips. If it has 5 circles, then it shipped with Target grips. Hopefully, my description makes sense.

Now you can look for another "bucket-list" item, because you sure can't improve on that!!

Guns International usually has pre 27s. For some odd reason, they often ask less money for a pre than for a 27-2. Odd

S151526 a 3 1/2 inch was shipped 2/59 and S151734 a 5 inch was shipped 4/58. Both are Model 1950 357 Mags. I suspect yours might letter as shipped close to one of these but again, nothing is certain about the birth date/shipping date of a S&W without a letter. The stocks are mid-1960s I believe as indicated by the ejector cutout and the box could be a replacement if the gun shipped after 1955/56 when S&W started to use blue boxes. But again, a factory letter will answer those questions for you. Regardless, very nice example by the pictures and one that you should be proud to own. I know I would be

That's awesome, congrats! That is one I am looking for too, but not in a big rush. By the time I find one crossing the trail, I am sure it will be about 40% higher priced then now lol. Go figure.

Beautiful gun! Cost can't enter into the equation if you are really looking for a pre 27..as there were only a finite number ever made. For example if you are looking for a Glock you can pass on the first 100 you see for sale anywhere because numbers 101 to 200 for sale will show up somewhere tomorrow.
My pre-27 is a 6-1/2" and Letters as shipping October 16, 1952. This was another gun that I had to have the funds available on the spot or I know there were at least 2 other guys ogling the piece.
Now.....if I can stumble on a period correct box that'll be icing on the cake. Does anyone know if these early 50's "pre" Model number guns shipped with parts list, tools (swab, brush, rod, mop, SAT), vapor paper, in those boxes at that time?

Sweet!!
I would like a pre 27 to go with my 2 27-2s. I would also like a 5 inch gun, so I think I'll try to scratch 2 itches there.
