Mystery Ivory Stocks
I recently came by a nice set of vintage K frame Ivory stocks, The mystery lies in the identity of the maker. There is a logo or makers initials as seen in the photos. Do any of our members recognize the Maker?
Thank You,

Not a clue but I like'em. Have you tried on a gun yet? Fit?

The Rest of the Mystery
I did try these on a early K frame and they fit......mostly, except for the horns. And even more mysterious is the rest of the inscription on the back of both panels giving a model number and serial number for an N frame gun. My guess was that these were partially cut down for a K frame but for some inexplicable reason not completed. Not sure what I am going to do with these, probably wait until the mood strikes me and then fit the horn area to a proper K frame configuration. I sure was hoping that someone would recognize the makers mark, but sofar the mystery remains.

Have you tried them on an N-frame rd butt?
They say Mod 25; I would guess someone round butted a Mod 25 ( to a non-std size?) and these stocks were made to fit it.

Sceva,
Unfortunately, I do not have a RB N frame. I would think that the area below the medallions would be wider though.

Those horns are proud of the frame the same amount that N-frame stocks would be.
I agree that they are likely for a round-butt N-frame.
They are quite lovely!

Those horns are proud just like the rosewood "horns" on my Model 27 Classic. I was very annoyed by them and S&W told me the rosewood Magna stocks were pretty special so I should leave them alone. So I did. I tossed them into a box somewhere and put elks on the gun instead. However, in the case of ivory stocks, well, THAT I could tolerate!
Those are gorgeous!!!

Gary,
Have you given any thought to the fact that the gun listed may have been a Jovino or Behlert (before an N-frame round butt standard).
I have several, and so does my dad. You can always send them to me and I will check the fit for you

Those all all good possibilities, later I will check the fit on a N frame SB and see how the horns line up on it. Thanks for the thoughtful ideas,

Here are some photos of the grips placed on a .44 HE model of 1950. They align just fine and the horns fit well, but they are narrower in width through the medallion area. Is the RB N frame narrower in this area?? Possibly for a special order Model 25??
I was looking through the 4th ed of SCSW and it looks like these may be for model 625 Model of 1989. This may why I did not recognize these grips as the newest S&W I own was made in 1957.

Back in the ‘80s I bought a pair of N frame ivories from Ajax. They were thin and didn’t balance well on my Model 27. I reworked them for my K22 and carved the date on the back of the stocks.
Your pair was reworked for a K frame, whoever did the work just never finished the job.

Gary,
To me it is always good to find a pair of Ivory grips, even if you don't have a gun that they fit. While looking at the backs of your grips, my thoughts were that maybe what you are seeing was actually scribed all by the owner. He may have put what gun they fit, as well as, his initials.

153,
This is my suspecion as well, I might have to finish the job, but I want to make sure they don't fit an N frame RB.
Boykinlp,
I do love Ivory as well and these are really nice. I believe you are correct in that the inscriptions on the back were made by a previous owner. I sure don't want to go grinding on them until I am absolutely certain there don't an N frame RB.
To all: If you have a round butt N frame and care to remove the grips and make a tracing I sure would like to hear from you.
Thanks,

They are for a RB N frame. Look old but maybe made out of old ivory. Most RB N frames are newer models.

Most FACTORY RB N frames are newer. I rounded a Model 28-2 back in the 80s and am aware of others earlier than that.

I round butted a M25-5 in 1980. I bought this revolver new from McCain's Uniform Supply in Birmingham AL in June 1980.

Hi Gary,
Nice stocks! The serial # is from 1980 to 83.
The factory N-frame RB has K-frame proportion until you get about halfway up the back strap from that point on it's still an N-frame.
I think they have to be N frame stocks because the top is sytrictlyN frame. Someone may have altered them from N frame SB stocks.
The only RB models with complete K/L size RB grip frame are the X frame 500/460 Mags, 329, 325.

This is likely not useful at this juncture, but...… I had a set of really nice Reindeer antler grips that I had gotten from Pat Grashorn. I threw them on a new Model 69 and they fit perfectly.....with the exception of the horn, exactly as yours looks. I had to rework the tops/horn section of the grips to fit right. Attaching a picture here for reference. They previously had a home on a round butt N and fit great.

I am of the opinion that your beautiful ivory grips were custom made for one specific gun, a gun that most probably had its butt modified from round to square. So there will not be a universal fit. These particular grips will most likely not fit very well on any other gun.

Just find a N frame that they fit. Then buy that N frame. I bought a set of grips to fit a S&W 625 Mountain gun. Then a couple of months later I bought the Mountain gun. Problem solved.

Gentlemen,
The mystery has been solved. I had posted on this thread when it first began that I thought that these stocks fit a Jovino 25-2. I received an email a little while back asking if I would try the fit on one of my Jovinos. The package arrived here shortly after. I pulled out my 25-2 and removed the Pachmayr stocks and slipped the ivory on for a test fitting....my guess was correct! They fit like they were made for my gun. The serial number on the stocks was about 150 away from my gun and about that same amount from my dad's Jovino 25-2.
Thanks to a very kind offer to trade, these stocks are now permanently paired with my Jovino 25-2. Here is a slightly dressy working rig. The leather is by Andrews and will go just perfectly with one of my smooth ranger style belts. The moon clip holder sets the clip over the belt (3 rounds inside, 3 rounds outside) and holds them quite well.
What do you think?
Here is the 'before' shot.
Here is the 'after'
I have a S.D. Myres floral tooled to try on next. I will post those pictures in the BBQ gun thread.
Thanks again Gary! You have made 2020 a lot more bearable

SAFireman,
I am so happy that you were able to ID them for me, and that you had a home for them. They were getting close to being sanded down to fit a K frame. All is well that ends well.
Thanks again,
Gary

That patina is gorgeous...I know a guy that uses ivory, antler, bone and mother of pearl for scales on custom made knives. He claims that giving your ivory, antler, bone and mother of pearl a good rubbing of lanolin once a year will keep it from drying out and cracking.

Gary,
I am very pleased that they did not get ground down to fit a K frame. They are destined to remain on this gun until it passes to another caretaker (hopefully one of my sons).
I do hope that the stocks that I sent you find a loving and deserving home as well.
Thanks again.

Awwwwwwww..........
Almost makes ya tear up, don't it?
Group hug everbody?
Seriously, incidents like this on this board, where the interchange of information causes a puzzling and truly scarce item like these grips to be identified and then placed where they belong is truly gratifying. Almost makes up for the debacle of Game 4 tonight. Almost.
