For All You King Sight Addicts
I recently picked this up because I had never seen another one and thought it would be a cool addition.
I couldn’t think of a better way to tote some vintage target guns to the range!
Does anyone have a catalog mentioning a “bullseye” or “Pistol” box?
Just wanted to share so here are some pictures!

Yes, quite common back in the late 40's thru 80's, made by several different companies, the King Brand being the Cadillac of the makers.
They were popular with the Bullseye competition shooters which have all but disappeared in recent years.
I see you have the scope with yours still. The top tray had a rod that went thru the dividers with a wing nut on the end to tighten them, securing the guns. I still have one myself. Nice find.

Ive seen a few different range boxes by several makers, but that’s the very first one I’ve seen or even heard of from King. Congratulations on a great find. I’ll be watching this thread for more information in hopes to enjoy the King boxes vicariously.

That's a nice old Bullseye shooters box. Is it a 3 gun or 4 gun box?
Many companies made boxes in this style.
Yours is uniquely "retro" in that it only accommodates iron sighted pistols or revolvers. (Would we expect anything else from a box branded by King's?)
Later types by Pachmayr, Gun-ho, and a few others are taller to accommodate scopes or red-dots.
I like yours better!
The leather handle and corner protectors are especially nice touches!

I had a Pachmayr! I have not seen it in years, I hope it is in the shed!

I have built boxes in the past, those leather corners are great. Try to build one today. I build range boxes mostly for myself, I use brass corners and try to build them in the old way. I'm usually into them for around $75 just in parts. I use leather "arrow" type handles and make the strap retainers out of brass, the hinges are the most expensive part. Thats a really neat box you have, I like anything older than I am that is in as good or better shape than me.
I cabbaged onto one that came into the club and was put on the donation table, it was home-made with nice brass corners. It had been shot somewhere along the way and had a bullet hole and slight damage, I'm sure it was an interesting story and maybe why the guy gave up handguns and let it go.

Pistol Range Boxes
Here's the Hogue version of the range box. It was my wife's birthday present to me in about 1980 when I was shooting on the PD's shooting team. I still use it almost weekly.

I have one that looks very similar and copies the design. It was hand made by my brother when we were in high school. He went on to be captain of his college handgun team and won many trophies using a 6" Highway Patrolman. He always went to the range with his homemade range box, spotting scope attached.
Byron passed away in September, 2018. I now have his HP, the range box and a few other shooting-related items. I also have all his trophies, which I found stashed away in a box hidden in a closet. I've been thinking that I might bring all that stuff to a symposium one year and do a display honoring my late brother and his prowess with a Smith & Wesson revolver.

King Gun Case
Neat case! Here are a few pages from King’s # 19 pre-war catalog.

This early post-war K-22 sat in just such a box in a suburban Miami garage for decades before I bought it, alongside a contemporary Colt Sport Woodsman. Both of course have pits where they sat in the felt lined supports and both of course have been shot a lot since I bought them. And that’s why I gave the box to a friend.
That King box is pretty cool though.
Regards,
turnerriver

I still have my "Gun-Ho" 4 gun box. It hasn't been used in probably 20 years. I had bought a unknown brand box at an auction (where they didn't know what it was), for .25. Cleaned it up and sold it for $25.00. I was going to sell my Gun-Ho box, but because of the bulk, it cost more to ship it than the box is worth.

I bought Pachmayr Deluxe in the 80s and used it once. I still have it in a closet with timer and scope mount. A friend I shoot with has a King 45 acp that shoots really well with S&W sights.

I got some time to clean up the spotting scope attached to the lidtoday, the lenses were very dirty but some TLC and about 100 QTips later it’s like new!

A King 45 w/ S&W sights? I’m surprised King would build one of their guns and put the “lesser” sights from S&W on it. Are you sure they aren’t King sights as well?

The old scope is almost as cool as the box (“ almost”). Could you give us some more details about it (maker, power, etc) please? Then a nice picture with the cleaned up box filled with a K-22, a K-38 and a hardball Gun built on an old GI 45 or a Commercial Model... in the words of the great detective, “this is the stuff dreams are made of.”

It’s an old mossberg Model A but I’m not really sure on the power. I have the K22 and K38 but I’m missing an appropriate 1911.... for now

I remember those boxes
After I finished basic training the Army sent me to a little post in Maryland. I met 3 guys who were shooting on the post pistol team and I joined up. Our best shooter had one of the boxes. Our post had a few Ruger 22s and some old 1911s. We didn't get much practice but did go to at least one formal match. I shot next to an Army sergeant who had all the right guns, ammo, box and scope. I was in awe.
I've been a shooter all my life and still shooting...but not one-hand Bullseye.

You are going to make me drag my Sony out to shoot it. He has the King pouch with logo it came with also. They look like the sights on my 15 no dash.

At first glance the pre-War King micro revolver sights resemble the post-War ones from S&W. I'm guessing that's what you are seeing, but of course I could be wrong.

I will ask him to bring it to the range and I will snap a few photos if he still has it. He was asking $1200 but I was short on cash.

Nice box. I have a old Pachmyr three gun box with the spotting scope on the lid like yours. A friend that shoots with me uses a Gung-Ho box. We get curious folks over to look at them when we are shooting on the range.
