Default M&P single action?

Have a fella tryin to sell me an M&P single action circa early fifties. Could this be a legit factory revolver? Did they make a fixed sighted M&P in SA only? (Can’t imagine why they would.)

There was a K-38 Masterpiece made in single action only, for target use. I don't believe there were any M&Ps purposely made that way. However, the DA fly can be removed from the hammer, making it SAO. My guess is that's what this one is. Might pull the sideplate off and look.

S&W used to sell the SA only K frame hammer, with trigger, as a separate parts kit.

I doubt that its a factory configuration. To my knowledge, S&W never made any fixed sight M&P's that were single action only.

Doubtful. You just never say never with S&W. Only a factory letter will tell for sure.

Any double action could be converted to Single Action only, but a Single action only (factory) can not be returned to double action unless hammer is replaced. There is a single action only hammer that has no provision for a DA sear.

M&P single action?-1965-king-ror-priuce-inc-catalog-jpg

I have a 1965 King For Price, Inc. catalog and it lists a Model 14 Single Action. Not sure how many years they offered them?

I passed up a 6" Model 14 SAO years ago at a shop in Bridgeport, CA. Kicked myself for years after.

That SAO Model 14 is the only SAO K-frame I am aware of. Am still betting that the DA fly has been removed from the hammer.

More than likely----------although there is no need to remove the sideplate to confirm. Cock the hammer, and look inside. The object you see at the front of the hammer is the DA "fly". It may be confirmed as such by pressing against its lower portion with a suitable probe----punch/screwdriver/pencil. It is spring loaded, and should move back and forth in response to your probe----back and forth. If what you're pressing against doesn't move/respond accordingly, it's either not the piece in question, or it's crudded up beyond belief.

The bottom line of all this is the gun in question has either been messed with, and is in need of some restorative work, or is otherwise, and still in need of some help.
