Is this a model 686?
Hello, I'm trying to find the model number on this revolver I inherited. The only numbers I could find are on the yoke, as seen in the picture. It looked like a model 686 to me, but I'm not sure. Thanks for any help!

Well, no.....
It's not a 686 which has a full length barrel lug and wasn't manufactured until 1981.
It looks like a nickel model 19 or a mod 66, but somebody should be along with a definitive answer.

Not a 686.
It is a .357 Magnum. That is its NAME as well as its caliber.
What most folks would call a "Pre-model 27."
Made 1955, a very fine and valuable revolver.
Nickel plated, not stainless; FACTORY nickel.
Full serial number is on the butt, under the target grips, but that is it inside the ejector rod shroud and should appear on the rear face of the cylinder.
The number under the yoke is a "fitting number" with no significance after it has been assembled and left the factory.

That is a beautiful post-war N-frame .357 Magnum in absolutely beautiful condition. The rosewood non relieved target stocks are also period correct, but would have been a special order. In 1957, when S&W started assigning model numbers instead of just names, that model became the Model 27, hence the reason that collectors call it a "pre-27" as noted by Jim above.

Pre 27 and valued at probably double what a 686 is, especially in Nickle.

That 5-screw ".357 Magnum" sure looks nice. What is the serial number range on the butt of your gun? I see an N-six digit number in the barrel shroud but that wouldn't be the serial number on a 5-screw.
You inherited a gun from someone who obviously had impeccable taste in S&W revolvers and owned one of the most iconic.

In this case, the N means Nickle. It is not part of the serial number. Just another example of how inconsistent S&W was in their markings.
The 5 inch barrel and rare stocks make that a very desirable revolver. Of course condition is everything and that one has it. Besides being a 5 screw model, which again we all dote over.
I don't know the market well enough to give you a very accurate guess at what it would sell for, but I think somewhere in the $1,000 to $2,000 range would get you in the ballpark. Make sure you know how to remove the stocks before you do it! They are easy to damage!

Going to say isn't that a 5".
Until 1980 the cataloged barrel lenghts for the "27" was 3 1/2 and 5 and 6 or 6 1/2 inches..
The 5 inch is fairly uncommon...... or you just don;t see many for sale.
Nice gun ..... Market value; my WAG $1,500 or so?????

The 5" N frame makes my heart go pitty-pat. I say that knowing that the cost for any of the ones I would like is not worth it to me, especially as I get more and more in need of an RDS on an autopistol as a good choice.
