Default Help ID my revolver

I recently inherited a S&W revolver from my dad, who was gifted it by my fire chief grandfather in the early 70's. My initial review shows it to be a left Hand Ejector, SN 58400 (found on both the bottom of the grip and cylinder), 38 S&W Special US Service CTGs, 4 inch barrel, hand ejector fixed sights. There appears to be a strain screw on the grip, no swivel. There are several patent dates on the barrel, from April 9, 89 to Dec 17, 01. Any help in identifying the year and background of this gun would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

You have a .38 Hand Ejector, better known as the Model 1902 or Military & Police model, from around 1904/05. Around the time of your serial, changes including most noticably a square butt shape led to the Model 1905; round-butt guns like yours continued to be known as the Model 1902.

The US SERVICE CTG addition to the caliber stamp indicated that it could chamber both .38 Special and .38 Colt, the then-current military caliber of identical diameter. But it would have been a civilian purchase; this model was not military issue at the time.

The gun appears original, obvious well-used and the finish worn somewhat.

SN 58652 shipped on 6/9/1905. Your M1902 should be from close to that date. The "U. S. Service Cartridge" referred to is actually the .38 Long Colt (there is also an even earlier cartridge, the .38 Short Colt, which is still manufactured). The .38 Special cartridge is pretty much dimensionally identical, but it is longer than either of the .38 Colt cartridges. Most of the double action revolvers used by the U. S. Military at that time (from the early 1890s to around 1911) were .38 Colts. Beginning in 1905, there was another very similar S&W revolver (the Model of 1905) introduced. It is nearly identical to the Model of 1902, except that it has a square butt, not the round butt of the M1902. BTW, the M1902 was also available chambered in the .32-20 caliber.

Welcome to the Forum.

"...a left Hand Ejector..."

Not sure what you mean by that.

Probably refers to the cylinder swinging out to the left side.

Given the provenance , that revolver has real value to you.
Shoot , enjoy , perhaps pass it on someday.
All in the family.
