Default 2” m&p, S prefix, curious about dob

Hello all,
Went to a local shop yesterday and saw this beauty. While I don’t know much about them, I figured it was worth the asking price, so now it’s mine.

2”, all numbers matching including the grips, also in a gold box but the label has fallen off along its journey. It appears to me to be in very good condition with only a few minor imperfections. From what I’ve read so far I’m assuming 1947 or 48 manufacture. Serial number is in the S9521XX range. The gold box has what appears to be “1 of 7” and “Target Shop” written on lid.

Anybody have one of similar serial number that can nail the month and year closely?

Anybody know anything about a group of seven m&ps being shipped?

What do you all think a current value would be? I don’t want to say what I paid at this time but I’m curious to see how I did on my own guesstimating of value

I’m sure a Jinks letter will answer most of these questions but I just had to ask right away.

Thanks, John

There were quite a few of the M&P snubbies in that general SN range shipped in the late 1947 period. The closest SN to yours I have listed is S951985 which shipped on 10/15/47. As always, condition stongly influences value. In average condition, $500-$700. Add at least $100 for the box. The postwar snubbies are fairly desirable acquisitions as compared to the later pre-Model 10s. This is one of mine fairly close to yours.

There were lots of 2" square butt M&P revolvers produced in serial range S948000 through S960700. I have 43 of them accounted for in my database. Up to about S954400, they all seem to have shipped in October, 1947. Most of the rest of them went out the door in November and December, with a few hanging around until January, 1948.

This serial range was not exclusively 2" revolvers. Batches of 4" and 6" guns are scattered among them, as well as a few with 5" barrels. But it seems that the snubs were predominating in that serial group.

Only a letter can tell you for certain, but it is highly likely your revolver shipped in October, 1947, based on my research.

As for the label "falling off" the end of the box, I rather doubt it. The gold boxes had the information embossed on the box, not on a paste-on label. I don't have a picture handy of an M&P box from that period, but the end would look something like this:

Before the gold boxes were introduced, the M&P came in a maroon box that did have the paper end label. They looked like this:

I think DWalt is in the right ballpark on the price.

I have a 2" in the S957xxx range that shipped 11/47, so I think DWalt and Jack have nailed it as close as possible. Only a factory letter and maybe some research by S&WHF can help explain the notations on the box.

Your gun is very nice. I love the snub nosed guns with the half round front sight.

When I looked at your pictures the first time, I thought maybe the gun was almost new. But, when I blew the pictures up and looked closer, in the second picture, there appears to be some freckling on the cylinder at one of the flutes and some cylinder edge wear. That is ashame, since it doesn't even seem to have a turn line. If I am seeing correctly, I think the prices quoted are fair.

Without any freckling, having a S prefix serial number, and the correct box, it probably would bring more at auction. JMHO. So, now that you have some answers to your value question, how did you do at the local shop? Here is a picture of the end of my box from 1949 of my gun like yours except in nickel finish:
