Trying to ID a SW.38 - model and manufacture date
Greetings,
I am trying to ID the for sure model Number and probable Date range of manufacture on a Blued SW .38 revolver
SN on Butt plate - S948909
Yoke stamp - 21275
Five total screws on frame, including one under the wood grips and and the Strain screw.
Frame stamp under the Yoke - 36 21275
Right side of gun has large SW logo on frame
Fixed sights, front sight is rounded like a half circle, rear sight is part of frame
4” barrel
Wood grips with SW metal logo
38 S&W special CTG on right side of barrel
two line patent info on left side of barrel

Nice, albeit finish challenged, post war (just post war) M&P. With the sharp shouldered magnas!
Later became the Model 10.

Welcome to the forum.
Too early to have a model #, only a model name: ".38 Military and Police".
Post war with improved hammer block safety with new sliding bar, but still has the pre war/wartime long action.
The assembly #s 21275 in the yoke actually match, the 36 in the frame's yoke cutout is the inspector I.D. code.

As has been said, a post-war .38 M&P from the S-prefix series. The serial places this one in late 1947. I have an S961- that shipped in December.

October/November, 1947, would be a likely ship date. I show one 300 numbers lower that shipped in October and one 800 numbers higher that shipped in November. Keep in mind they were not shipped in serial order, so those dates are able only to estimate the approximate month of shipment.

This cannot be correct. There are four screws in the sideplate (one hidden by the stocks, as you mentioned). The fifth screw is in the front of the trigger guard. The strain screw is not counted as a frame screw. If you did count it, then it would be a sixth screw.

This is confusing. Are you certain this is an apt description?
The left side of the barrel should be marked SMITH & WESSON.
The right side should show the caliber designation.
The patent dates were always stamped on the top of the barrel during this period. By 1946, they had not appeared on the side for many, many years.

Check to see if a matching SN is stamped on a flat at the bottom of the barrel. If it does not match the SN on the butt, it could be a replacement barrel. There should be 5 screws, not counting the spring tension screw.

DWalt's comment suggests a possibility. However, I cannot see a notch on the underside of that barrel, and to have one old enough to have the patent dates on the side, we would expect a machined notch to accommodate the mushroom shaped extractor rod knob.

Thank you for your reply. Your information is much appreciated. My bad regarding the description. The patent info is on the top of the barrel. There are 6 total screws - I did not clearly differentiate the strain screw from the other five. The Smith and Wesson stamp is on the left side of the barrel and the caliber and CTG are on the right side.
