Run of the Mill M&P
We have seen a lot of beautiful, well kept revolvers here the last couple of weeks. How about a dose of reality? Nothing against the beautiful ones but this is what many of us find common to us.
This was given to me yesterday, by my elder brother. A 5”, 38 S&W Special, M&P from maybe the 30’s(?). Some discoloration, surface rust and ill fitting grips that are numbered about 21,377 numbers off. Probably mismatched at the factory! Yeah, probably not.
I intend to spiff it up a bit and it will join another 5”, 38 S&W Special, M&P that I have.
Thanks for looking and any insight will be appreciated.

Sounds like you got a good gun for knocking around in the field and at the range... no worries about a little additional wear!
I especially like the Tyler T-grip! It looks like it’s been on the gun for a while. It looks like the gun got carried a lot... what about the action? Has it been shot (or at least cycled) enough to acquire the iconic smoothness of the old Smiths?

426XXX would have shipped in the mid-1920s and not the 1930s. If those stocks have a serial number somewhere near yours, they would most likely be post-WWII K frame style Magnas, maybe as late as 1960 era.

Hey Kevin, that M&P is from the mid-1920s and the grips are post-war sharp shoulder magnas. It should be a smooth shooter though.

Kevin, I have one in nickel from that same time frame in that same condition....love to shoot it,, just because I can!...bet it will be a fun shooter also

While it could possibly use a bath, I see a perfect "poke around pistol" there! I've been hoping to find one in about the same condition in 32-20 for "Poke'n & Plink'n". I love the way magna's and Tylers work together too.
In fact, I just pulled this 66-1 from my hip for the picture. It's been my "comforter" for the last week or so. Congratulations on the great gift from your brother. He must think a lot of you. Clean, Shoot, Repeat!

Indeed, a 426-range serial indicates manufacture in late 1922 or early 1923. So that number on the stocks is much further off because it came off a gun with a letter prefix.

Does a Victory count?
5", .38 S&W... British issue.
This one's special to me because my Dad brought it home from WWII. He traded a carton of cigarettes to a British tank NCO for this Victory and P-08 Luger, which I also have. The Victory was also the first handgun I ever shot.

The way the top of the grips stick out from the frame make me think those are for an N frame.

I like it.... a lot!
It should be a good shooter and, if sound. capable of performing many tasks for you. If nothing more, it will be a fantastic range gun providing hours of enjoyment.
And, lets not forget, the price point was better than most of us ever get to see. Keep it, use it, and enjoy it!

Me too, but they have been modified so they no longer work on an N. Although I have not tried them on a prewar.
And if you look at the photograph of the serial number, the play see-saw with the frame. I have many pairs of stocks for N frames but don’t think I have one for a K frame.

Well Froggie, I fooled you. That Tyler went on that revolver about 5 minutes before the picture. I actually tried on several and that one felt best.

So somewhere around 1922 or 1923? Thank you. I will pair it with my Springfield Model 1922 that was built in July of 1922. They should pair well The Springfield was converted from 22 LR to 22 Hornet.

So what is the attraction, price, wartime revolver, etc. I am truly curious.

4262xx shipped in 4/1922, yours is probably close to that. Too bad if they are modified N-frame grips. Original sharp shoulder N-frame grips from the post-WWII period are somewhat desirable.

Do you have other nearby serials to support that? It seems awfully early for a 426- gun. The MADE IN USA is present on the OP’s gun, and my impression is that serials didn’t hit 400- until about April 1922.

There are a bunch of them in the SWCA database. I will take another look, but it is somewhat acedemic with tiresome guesses with no proof. We all know that 1920s M&P revolvers did not ship in order.

Probably a subject for a separate thread , but I am a sucker for the milling marks and parkerized / phosphate finish of the Victory and DSC revolvers. Oh - and the lanyard ring. Speaks to the era.

A Bit of an Update.
I had a couple of K frames out for the annual dusting and wiping off chore and decided to swap the stocks around. While the Run of the Mill sticks could fit the other K frames, one of the other stocks would even come close on the RotM revolver! After some probing and tracing I believe the grip frame has been bent and these stocks were partly modified to fit this revolver. They do not fit well so I may swap these out with something else
Or, how hard could it be to straighten the grip frame?

My money is on dropped on itw butt from some height. I think a wood frame could be made easily to anchor the frame in a vise to anchor and protect it. With a little leverage, you should be able to reshape the butt-frame.

Looks like the grip frame is bent. I've got two in my shop that are bent just like that. Both of them were bent from falling off of moving cars. It may still work like that, but you ain't gonna find any grips that will fit right. It might be possible to straighten it with a vise and a rubber mallet (very carefully).

The grip shape and angle is reminiscent of the Bisley style. Hmmm, a S&W Bisley? Maybe I need to add adjustable sights!

I would'nt say "run of the mill" so much as "Plain Jane"/factory standard handguns that probably saw more use providing security for a family and teaching pistol marksmanship-and maybe putting food on the table than any glamour gun ever did.

Maybe firmly grasp the main portion of the frame and wack the front toe of the grip frame by the main spring screw with a babbitt bar. Moved one way should move back.
