Smile I FRAMES OR NOT?

Ok, some screw up using the I phone to do this. Photo isnt the best but here it is any way. Here we find an I frame from 1927. All original and matching, including the stocks which are flawless. This one is in the .38 special, and tight as new through out. I am not a collector but this one seems to be 97%+ in my book. Anyway, she shoots good, but I am of the opinion only lead should be used. Wadcutters at that.

We just love photos of I frames! If you can e-mail them to me, maybe I can post them for you. Send me a PM if you would like me to.

Lovely gun, but it canít be an I frame chambered in .38 S&W Special. It sure looks like a .38 Special M&P revolver to me, which is a K frame.

The largest caliber offered in the I frame was .38 S&W. The frame window was too short and didnít accommodate a cylinder long enough to handle the .38 S&W Special cartridge. Thatís why S&W introduced the J frame in 1950.

Great looking revolver! I was not aware the I frame was available in 38 S&W Special? I was given to believe the reason for the J frame was to build a revolver with a longer cylinder to accept the longer cartridge.

Obviously, s&wchad types faster than I type. Here is my old 32 Hand Ejector on the I frame.

I’m going to go with K frame as well. It appears to have a six shot cylinder, which for a 38 of any sort would also require the mid size or larger frame. Those standard ( sometimes called “pencil”) barrels along with the pre-War service grips will fool the eye and make the old M&P examples from the twenties seem smaller than they are.

Correct. If it's I it's.38 S&W. Looks like a K frame to me too.

Maybe J.R. will post more pics.

Measured it against a K frame and it is some what smaller.?? I have entertained thoughts of honing it out to .38 S&W but cant bring myself to do it. So, we are saying it isnt a I frame?? Hmmm

On I frames the cylinder is too short to accept Specials.

Is it 5 or 6 shots ?(I frame 38's are 5 shooters). Hmm.

Can you post more (and bigger) pics?

Were you measuring it against a Model 10 or a K frame 357 magnum? The magnum K frames are slightly beefier.

Thumbs up BOWING TO THE EXPERTS

Ok, sure wasnt trying to mislead any one. Got this rascal out and compared it to one of my KNOWN I frames. Cyliinder is longer, barrel is 6 inch, but while somewhat beefer that the I frame it most certainly isnt what I would call a K frame. Serial number is: 56193 O -- strange, the O doesnt seem to be in the same form as the numbers, note the space after the 3,?? All the aside, it it a beatuiful piece, shoots well for 93 years of age. Wish I was in as good of shape. Thanks everyone for putting me straight.

Wouldnít life for everybody be so much easier if S&W had done like Colt and actually put the name of the model on the barrel of their DA revolvers?

I see indeed nothing but a nice 1920s M&P in your photo, all correct with stocks, logo, and 1927 at the latest due to the ejector rod knob. And yes, it is as K-frame as K-frames get

The barrel rib and adjustable sights add bulk to the 14 and 17.

Yep, early K frames are fairly "dainty" compared to postwar K's

I'm pretty sure I own the only true I frame .38 Special. I acquired a bubbu'd Terrier several years ago. I fitted it with an early Chief's Special barrel and a machined Model 36 cylinder to fit in the cylinder window. It will shoot all but the longest of .38 Special rounds. It's the one in the middle between an early Chief's and a standard Terrier.

I FRAMES OR NOT?-20191012_165613-jpg

The one on the left is a .32, 6 shot. The one on the right is a .38 S&W, a five shot. How do we know?
Notice the flute locations on the 6 shot relative to the cyl notches and compare them with the .38 5 shot on the right.

So since the OP's gun is a .38 and has flute locations like the .32, we know it's a six shot and therefore can't be an I frame.

Is that the serial # on the butt of the grip frame?

That is not the serial number. It will be on the butt, back of cyl, and bottom of barrel.
