How rare are 17-1's?
The SCSW states add an additional 25 to 50%.
Is this realistic? I have one on an auction site right now, it is not drawing a great deal on interest. Perhaps that variant is bit esoteric.
Who's to know?

The -1 model variation for all models was shipped mainly in 1962 and are somewhat scarce. Interest varies by model with the 29-1 being highly sought after, followed by the 19-1 and then the other models.

Not to mention the Model 28-1 Highway Patrolman. So far, we know of only ONE that exists.

I have K22 Outdoorsmans, pre-17s, a no dash, -2, -3, and -4. I've been looking a long time to find a -1 and I'm still looking. One sold on GB a few weeks ago ($1025 with box/papers) and I probably should have gone after that one. Perhaps not "rare" but there sure aren't many of them around for sale.

Make your own " dash 1 " Find a "No dash" that has the engineering change that required the dash 1 stamping, but didn't receive it, which is why the dash 1s are uncommon. Get out your stamps and correct the factory error ! The workers did not take the time to go find a set of stamps to add the dash 1s as they were used to just producing the No Dashes, until the foreman got on their tails. Ed.

When I was building a complete set of K-38 Masterpiece revolvers (1947-1982), I was lucky enough to pick up an ANIB 14-1 early on. I got the -2 a bit later and the last one I found was the Model 14 with no dash number. I ended up with a couple extras; 4 screw with no model number, a heavy 5 screw, some -3 and -4. Some of those have since been traded off. The point being, I did not have to search long and hard for the -1. What could have been a serious challenge turned out not to be.

Then how I know for sure my 17 # 3318XX no dash had the engineering change made and by factory error was not stamped dash 1 ?
As per Mr Jinks letter it shipped from factory in 1958.

The dash 1's didn't start until 1959.

I decided to acquire 8 3/8 lengths in model 17's up through 17-4. Took me a year to find the 17-1!
