Price Help
A friend of mine was in a pawn shop today. He knows I collect S&W revolvers. He sent me a link to the shops web site, so I could see the gun in question. They have it tagged as a 4" model 48. I could clearly see it was not a K frame but what looks to be a J frame with a square butt, wearing diamond magna grips. I could also see the barrel is marked 22 long rifle. It has a pretty tall front ramp site and a rear adjustable site. It is blued with I believe a 4" barrel and it appears to be in 95% or higher condition. I looked in my 3rd edition copy and I believe it is a Model of 1953 I frame pre-model 34. What would be a reasonable value for that model these days?

It depends on the condition of the gun. I doubt you will get anyone to give you a definitive value without being able to see the condition of the gun. That being said, here are the values from the SCSW, 4th Edition:
ANIB Exc VG Good Fair
850 700 550 450 350
(Page 242).

Probably not much help but here are a couple pictures of mine for which I paid some $450 for five or six years ago. Don't see these for sale too often, I would expect it to be $500-$600 if I found one locally now.

If the gun in question is a Model of 1953 .22/32 Kit Gun, the square butt version is much less common than the round butt. Mine is serial #232xx and shipped in November, 1956. I rate it as a 95%+ gun and value it at $700. I paid $470 for it 3 years ago.

Can't be a Model 48 as that's a .22mag and wasn't introduced until 1959 or 60.

Thank you for your help gentlemen! I just gave the pawn shop a call and found out it is model stamped 43, SER # 728XX. Someone called them yesterday to let them know it is not a model 48. They pulled the photos from their add to reevaluate the price $495.95. I asked how much was it now, and the man said $1225.00. I thanked him for his time and said good bye.
