Default Old Truck Guns

In these interesting times when old folks are confined to quarters, civil unrest is just about everywhere, and the good guys all wear black masks to the grocery store and just about everybody offers curbside pickup due to COVID-19, what do you carry in your pickup/car. I recently changed my MO by going for a larger caliber then the old .38 special. It shoots true and packs a knockdown load, its an old lady from the 1930s, a second model .44 special with a cutdown barrel, refinished blue. and jig bone grips. I like the feel and weight of the N Frame and the smooth action, I carry her with 5 rounds like the old timers did. Here she is, so lets see what is in your pickup!

I get what you're saying with the "up-caliber" conditions of late...……...but to be honest I ain't jacking around. My away from the house/truck gun is in .45acp and has a 13 round magazine, with 2 extra mags in the console with it.

While I may go down with the ship I ain't going down alone if I have anything to say about it.

My "official" truck gun is a lever-action rifle, but more often than not, I throw a handgun in there, too. For years, it was my model 15.

Just recently, however, I started throwing this in the truck...Springfield model 1911 .45 acp. Not sure exactly why. I don't know if I felt that I wanted a little extra "fire power," or if I just wanted a change of pace.

I don't leave a gun in the car or truck anymore. I just carry them on my person and it's almost always a M649 or a Walther CCP 9mm. Sometimes I'll switch but for the most part that's it.

I have a couple of 2" K frames that I like to carry when I'm so inclined.

Mea culpa, I just realized this is the wrong forum for that revolver.

Fortunately, I have a couple that fit here.

A shortened 1917 and a converted Model 28-2.

Sig P938 or a Springfield Mil Spec. If I feel the need for more rounds a CZ P07.

Pardon me for asking, but why? I can understand it with a SAA, but I've always thought that a S&W, even an older gun, was safe with six. Please understand that I'm not giving you a hard time, I'm just here to learn.

And my truck gun- whatever I have on me at the moment. Maybe an extra or two, depending. But I don't have one that lives in my truck full-time.

Mule Packer, that's a nice rig for your 45 1911. Would you share who made it?

RobertJ: The revolver Delta is using should have the old side-swing hammer block safety, which was in the side plate. If it is working properly the gun is safe to carry w/6 rounds, but during WWII some revolvers with that safety had so much grease/dirt that the safety’s spring couldn’t move it, and accidental discharges were possible. That resulted in the change to the current safety (which works off the rebound slide). The older revolvers (like the triple-lock or 1917 should be carried with an empty chamber under the hammer. Delta sounds like he is just being cautious; always a good thing.

Sure. It was Rudy Lozano at Black Hills Leather out of Laredo, Texas. I have a couple of other rigs made by him, one being a shoulder rig. I really like his work.

Back when there wasn't much likelihood my vehicle would be broken into, I kept a Remington 552 .22 rifle inside at all times. Now I keep nothing of value inside my vehicles if I am not in there with them.

You're the man Jimmy.

I carry either a small revolver or a small semi-auto.
Its one or the other.

When the riots were ongoing and I had to go into the City, I carried this, with 2 speedloaders:

Now I'm back to the 342 with Underwood 125 grn. +p hollowpoints, and 1 speedloader in a pocket holster.
(best thing for shorts )

Current truck gun are this WW2 “sporterized” SMLE and a Star BM 9mm in the console.

I like the looks of the OP’s .44!

#3 can also be used as a crowd dispersal projectile.

In all seriousness...……..when you are in your vehicle and are rapidly approached by a violent mob, with no clear pathway to get out of the situation, it is not the time to wish you had a higher capacity handgun quickly at your disposal.

I used to keep a long gun in my vehicle as a part of my job for various reasons. (Nothing "contractor grade" just part of the ranch foreman life back then.) I learned real fast that unless you had the rifle right at your side at all times, bouncing around in the seat next to you, it was basically useless if you needed it in a split second...….which always seemed to be the case. Also, I would always need to place it out of sight when outside of the vehicle while in the city as folks will knock windows out and steal anything of value if they can see it...…..and God forbid someone uses it in a violent crime as you left it visible for someone to steal. (Yes nowadays they tend to make you the perp instead of the gunthief that commits the violent crime.)

Of course I may still keep a rifle, carbine, or shotty somewhere in the truck when I feel the need to do so, but once again usually not bouncing around next to me while out and about running errands in town. But in certain combative "situations" it is comforting to know that if you had to remove yourself from your vehicle for any reason you have a longgun or shotty as a primary means of self defense on your journey, albeit hopefully never having to come to that.

Also, with a handgun you can take it to and from the vehicle in a much less noticeable manner when that need arises.

Just my humble $.02 and probably worth exactly that.

Dale

Besides my carry piece a CZ75 with one mag inserted & 3 more handy. It's not a rifle but someone will have to contend with it.

Some flavor of 9mm Glock. G19, G26, or G43, depending on the situation. I like night sights when its dark. With the 19 and 26, I use spare mags from a G17.

I don't have a dedicated truck/car gun and don't leave any guns in the vehicle ever, unless I forget for a spell. I vary the guns that I am carrying depending on the situation and where I am headed. Usually when we go on the road, I have several choices with us to cover all the bases, such as while camping. I worry more about 2 legged vermin than 4.

I also like the holster with the "old girl". I do not leave anything in my truck or car, but I do conceal carry.

With things getting the way they are these days, this might become my new carry.

I will say that I upgraded my EDC from a 5 shot Model 642 with a speed strip to a 6906 with 2 x 15 round magazines.

I have a Model 10 in a car safe.

Nice gun, BUT, that holster is an eye catcher. Very classy piece of leather work.

My truck gun is an old, well worn Gen 2 G20. With the +2 extension it holds 18 rds of 10mm. Also keep an extra 17 rd mag with it.

An old Remington Model 870 from the Escambia County Sheriff's Dept. and a 1911 in Super 38. I do tend to leave the Brill at home though.

As with many here, my carry gun is usually it. She is a .45 --

other times it can be almost anything, depending on where I am going. this 38/40 seems to come along a lot. :

Most anytime will find this K22 tucked away somewhere. You just never know what might pop up

Yugo M70AB2. Being carried around in a truck (or APC, airplane, etc.) is what these were designed for.

My recently acquired Glock 40 in 10 MM is my newest road gun. I got it from the estate of a recently deceased friend. I know he would want me to have it with me. Before that it was an old Gen 2 Glock 20 in 10 mm I got from another deceased friend. I keep a compact S&W M&P C in .357 Sig in a holster for walking around. Lately with all the stuff going on I've started bringing along an underfolder AK in a padded case. The problem is, there's not as many places to go as before. Until recently a six round revolver would solve most of my problems but it seems that innocent citizens now are being attacked by multiple assailants, thus the extra capacity mags. Leave me alone and I'll leave you alone.

Charlie, if you don't mind me asking...………..does the newer Glock 40 handle "full-power" 10mm loads reliably and safely? How is the felt recoil with such, and does it negatively affect your group size with full power loads?

Years ago I had a Glock 22 and Glock 23 and with the hotter 40cal loads of the day they were a bit snappy and it definitely showed in group sizes as say compared to most anything else I was shooting at the time...…...which included 45acp and .357Magnum examples.

Just curious if the Glock 40 10mm has been a great shooter for you. I have found my Glock 21C in .45acp has been a great performer with regards to accuracy and reliability. (As has been my Sig P250 in .45acp but it only has a 10+1 round capacity. Most folks don't like it's DAO trigger but as a revolver shooter I do rather well with it.)

Sorry for the tangent guys.

Back in '68 when riots were going on everywhere, I was driving a beat-up old 1958 Chevy pickup, which was my "desert" vehicle as well as daily transportation. I never had a "truck gun" per se, but I would often travel with this baby parked in the rack in full view of the rear window. It gave me a certain feeling of comfort when I had to drive through some particular areas in Phoenix. I never left it unattended for any length of time.

I keep it simple, 60-9 357 Magnum with 2 speed loaders, if 15 rounds of Hornady hollow points won’t get it done, time to get gone.

I do keep a revolver in my car. Under the seat, in a locked box, cabled to the seat frame. Not readily accessible, it's for emergency use if I find myself somewhere without a handgun. Box also contains a credit card and $100 in 1s, 5s & 10s. I wanted a pistol small enough to be a concealed carry piece.

The revolver is a 1968 Model 40. It corroded badly when stored on a boat and it was refinished as well as it could but it looks like hell. Functions perfectly. I have 3 speed strips with it for a total of 20 rounds. Load is my own 125 JHP loaded to a clocked 1150 FPS from the 2" barrel.

Not sure what the actual definition of “truck gun” is, but to my mind it’s a long gun that constantly resides in a window rack, etc., of a pickup. Mine was a Remington M11 20 gauge - even on school property, while in class. Similarly, my grandfather hung a browning A5 in his truck. According to the above posts, my current truck gun is my heat du jour.

A Taurus G2C with Viridan laser and 5 -12 round magazines reside full time in my Suburban's ConsoleVault.
When traveling into California to see kids/grandkids, substitute the mags with 10 rounders, G2C unloaded. Meets state law while remaining quick to access.

I would suggest that anyone who knows Charlie should not buy a Glock 10mm. It just ain't healthy.

As a handloader with a chronograph who has worked up 125gr jacketed 38spl+P loads in my S&W snubbies I can tell you that there are no published 38spl+P 125gr jacketed 1150fps 2" barrel loads listed in any of my many reloading manuals...…...nor from any of the powder or bullet manufacturer's websites.

Your 125gr/1150fps 38spl+P snubby handload is reaching/exceeding 9mm+P 124gr velocities in similar short length 9mm barrels.

38spl+P pressures are 18,500-20,000 psi max depending upon who's info you believe.

9mm+P pressures are 38,500 psi max.

Your 125gr 38spl+P 1150fps jacketed handload fired from a snubby is actually going faster than the Federal 9mm+P 124gr HST load (tested from a short barrel) in this video:

YouTube

Even Buffalo Bore's hot HEAVY 125gr+P JHP item #20B/20 is advertised at only 1050fps and Underwood's hot 125gr 38spl +P GDHP item #128 (advertised at 1250fps) gets only about 1050fps or less when fired in a snubbie revolver.

Please be careful as your load is exceedingly hot for a 38spl+P load...…..especially if using it in a corroded gun. (There is no such thing as a free lunch with regards to overpressure.)

Dale

I let my agency guns take the beating. I'm issued a Gen 4 G17, a G43, and a Rock River M4. Let them be what gets logged into evidence. My own guns stay home.

This is always at hand when I'm driving my truck. This was shot at 15 yards. Good enough for me.

Even though we live "out" in a county area and have never had anything stolen I told my wife not to be leaving her handgun in the vehicle overnight due to what is currently going on. (She typically doesn't but I wanted her to understand why it was very important right now.)

I too agree with not wanting them stolen from the vehicle, especially if a possibility of them then being used in a home invasion (I.E. mine) is a possibility due to such.

There are times when I want to live closer to the big cities just to be able to conveniently enjoy everything they have to offer...……...and then there are times I thank God that I don't.

While we are used to "taking care of ourselves" until the county sheriff can get to us we have upped our "what if" game for the time being with regards to as what to grab in just such an instance.

What a damn shame.

A well-camouflaged trunk (not truck) gun. For weird emergencies

I'm not knockin' some of the carbine "truck gun" choices here just understand that also having a handgun immediately accessible will allow you to much easier swing from window to window while inside the vehicle to take out multiple violent aggressors.

Much much easier EFFECTIVELY swinging a smaller handgun (one handed if need be) weighing a couple pounds or less versus swinging a longer carbine weighing 5+ pounds having to use both hands. Especially when seated behind a steering wheel with seat belt on.

Unfortunately in these circumstances you have be thinking about rounding the corner and immediately your vehicle is surrounded and in the mix of things.

What I carry in my truck/car is whatever my CCW happens to be at the time.

Lately that has been a PT145 MilPro compact double-stack 45ACP, with one in the pipe, 10 in the mag, and 10 more in a backup mag - all 230gr JHPs.

Most of the time it is in my left inner vest pocket, so it is still accessible even when sitting in the car with a seatbelt on.

I don't do off-body carry, and I certainly don't leave guns in my vehicles except locked in a small gun vault, and even then only for a short time if I absolutely can't take it with me - like going into the Post Office.
