Default Model 30 (30-1) 32 long but dunno the year

While I have been a shooter since age 12 and been an LEO/carries a gun since age 25, I have owned all of THREE wheelguns LOL.

My buddy needed money so he sold this to me. I know it’s a 32 Long, “probably” a Model 30/30-1? No model number (just a series of useless numbers, I read the sticky LOL), first three of SN # are 668. 2 1/2 inch, diamond grip etc. is in very good to almost excellent shape. Trying to determine correct model, approximate age and value although, while underpowered, I have no qualms throwing this in my pocket for a quick errand.

668xxx should make it a pre-Model 30 (AKA .32 Hand Ejector). The first Model 30 is stated as being 686458 (1958). In any event, around 1957-possibly 1958.

Buffalo Bore makes some good ammo for that purpose. That is a nice little revolver.

Since it’s 50’s era (i assume), and considering its condition, should I put it up or just keep it as a shooter? (ie. Any idea on value? Not looking to sell it though)

To me that looks like a magnificent "keeper".

I'd find something else to toss in the pocket.

Values on the little J frame 32s have long been ignored but that is now changing. While I don't have a real number suffice it to say nowadays they get a lotta love. In any case the diamonds and flat-latch make it cool. With that ramped front sight and no model number one might hazard a guess at 1956 as a year ,,,,, maybe.

I bought I nice one, albeit newer, for $425 two years ago. I would thing yours to be worth $500 anyway.

mtbguydfw,

Welcome to the forum!

That is a sweetheart!

Officially you have a "Model of 1953 .32 Hand Ejector". It has the 3 screw sideplate and is therefore built on the "new" I frame. Likely shipped about Aug.1958, just before they were being stamped Model 30. So it's considered a late pre-model 30.

It didn't become a J frame until Jan 1961 when it was introduced as the Model 30-1.

Because it is the new I frame and in such great condition, it sells for at least $600 and more at auction.

I would not holster or carry it, but would not hesitate to shoot it and keep it cleaned, they're just too much fun!

If you live on the South Side of Chicago, it would be perfectly appropriate to carry that “32 gun in your pocket for fun,” but here in VA I carry mine in a holster or my car console as my everyday CCW. I’ve heard good things about ammo available from Buffalo Bore, but for factory loads I lean toward Georgia Arms’ JHPs. I load a bunch for that and my other 32s.

The gun you have is very desirable and can make a great carry piece or house gun. In spite of nay sayers it does have potential as a SD weapon, at least I’m betting on it for me.

Agree, I never knew anyone who said, "Oh, it's just a 32 so go ahead and shoot me."

Regarding ammo, you can use either .32 Long or .32 S&W (which is shorter). In a pinch, even .32 ACP will work. There are much better calibers for defensive use, but even a .32 is better than throwing rocks.

One of my favorites, would love a snubby one like that. Now if you ever "need money", let me know!

I'm on the lookout for one of those myself, so I'm jealous of your new acquisition.

My wife is rather recoil sensitive and. 32 seems to be a sweet spot for her, while also elevating her choices above rimfire levels. The fact that it packs 6 rather than 5 as in .38s is thick icing on the cake.

I frames are starting to heat up at auctions. I've seen, in the past week, pre 30 3.5"s north of $750. Routinely see "Buy Now " offers above $650. And those aren't the 2" which imo is more desirable.

Were it me, I'd "bad, bad, Leroy Brown " that popper and enjoy the heck out of it.

Thanks for sharing it.

Serial # 6546xx left the factory in June of 1957, so yours would have most likely been shipped a bit later. It has become my most frequent concealed carry gun. Was out for a few hours this afternoon and it was in my front pants pocket in a DeSantis Nemesis holster. I keep it loaded with MagTech 98 gr SJHP ammo, which is a "tad" hotter than standard factory ammo.

Here are a few links that provide some interesting reading on the "underpowered" .32 S&W Long.

Thumbs up 32S&W L

Sold one just like that a couple years ago because I never use it. Lady that GAVE it to me, stated her husband bought it for her durning the riots in DC in 1968. Heven knows how long it had laid on the dealers shelf, even then. I have one with a longer barrel and stag stocks. It has the long ramp and flat latch. Wasn't it the best shape when I got it some 30 years ago and I had it re blued just because. Has the original stocks, but they got put away when I came upon the vintage Stags. would love to find a brushed blue Tyler for her. CONGRATS!! I also make a shot shell for mine.

Isn't amazing how much interest arises whenever anyone brings up the "red headed stepchild" of the S&W world. Everyone seems to think of the Chiefs Specials when they think of little snubby hideout guns, but the 32 HEs sure seem to get the nod with increasing frequency when real guns come out. Congrats to the OP for joining the "club."

I got a pre model 30 for just over 200. It’s the 3” which is a little less valuable but it’s a lot of fun to shoot. I’ve started teaching my fiancées daughter to shoot with it. They’re neat little guns and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another. Nice find.

They didn't change much in appearance, this one is a 30-1, 1971 vintage.

I load for all the 32s from S&W Long to 327, but I really liked having those “factory loaded” JHPs from GA Arms. I’ll have to save them for my EDC and serious social encounters.
