Believe to be a Registered Magnum
Just “ re “ acquired and some history . Belonged to RW “ Doc “ Nebergall BCI director state of Iowa . Apparently can be lettered As one of a group of 3 units sent in 1939 to the Criminal Institution Unit in Demoine . Revolver itself is in 97%+ original condition , not refinished , and all parts , serial numbers match . 4” has a tiny ! Amount of muzzle wear , surprising because Doc’s son Max Nebergall served w distinction as marine or navy ? Helicopter pilot , credited w making the first at sea rescue of a downed Corsair pilot . He stated to me back in 1990 he wore it throughout the Korean War in a shoulder holster . My question to the learned members on this forum , what would a fair ! Value be if offered ? No box and no papers . Also !!!! There is a strong possibility in order to get it stateside a brokers laser importation mark may have to be applied . Opinions of what a detractor Value wise that would cause ? A Historical letter is available I am led to understand Through information received by a gracious collector helping me identify the piece . Appreciate the input and your replies . Lengthy questions message please as forum rules appear to ask not to create a long dialogue ? Cheers from Canada thx

Very nice
Doc Nebergall was head of the Iowa Bureau of Criminal investigation, beginning in 1939 and served a long time.
Did you buy the gun from his son? Are you thinking about selling and importing it into the States? I’m not aware of any limitations on our threads, so by all means go ahead and tell your story and list your questions.
There is a “search this thread” function On the forum. Type in
Registered Magnum and read to your hearts content.
Yes, you have a RM, a highly coveted collectible, possibly the best gun ever made. You need to send in a request for a factory letter, which will give you the shipping details of the gun. The letter will hopefully confirm the oral history you have.
Interesting provenance that may add a little to value. We would love to see more (and better) pictures.
As to value, if condition is good as you say, I think $5000 to $8500 range.
You have a really great gun there. Congratulations. How long have you had it? Dave

Importers mark would be a slight detraction, in my opinion. Depends on how they apply it. Is it RM# 4977 and serial number 59051? See some holster wear but not much of a turn line. More details, please!

Finish looks very good but better check for/ask about factory rework marks to be on the safe side.

No factory rework marks nor is there any notation of such in the records . Very , very small amount of muzzle wear but I think what you are seeing is my poor photography skills and glare . Yes very feint timing mark . As I indicated , the info provided to me was somewhat of a favour from an advanced collector in Arizona . He obtained it I’m sure as a matter of professional courtesy . I have not applied for the letter possibly I will , it’s not the cost involved that’s neither here nor there , it’s just the wait time and the piece may very well be gone by then .

4" RMs are rare. It's a beauty. Guessing $8,000 to $10,000 but a pissing contest between bidders could drive it much higher at auction.

Import markings can vary from gaudy bordering on vandalism to very discrete markings that are carefully located and applied. The importing dealer applies them.
That subject is beyond the scope of your thread here, but there are several importer/dealers who are skilled in the proper techniques. Most are not. If applied properly, import markings can have only a modest effect on the value of the gun. Here is where your homework on importer selection will have a major role in how the imported gun turns out and its corresponding value in the USA.

Some natural light pics
As questioned above the muzzle area shows little or no holster wear . On the extreme round edges of the barrel is about it . The luster/ polish of the blue is so high that it’s very difficult to get a pic w no glare . The front sight appears to be a “ gold “ inset dot .
Cheers
I have messaged a couple of you fellows , Ck inbox , unless my messaging isn’t working ?
Thx

Easily worth $10K in my book - even with no box or certificate. The gold insert is a Call Gold Bead, fairly common on RMs.

Good lord that’s beautiful ! I don’t have one but I want one, if that was in front of me at 5 it would be mine in a NY minute, at 6 maybe another of those minutes ! 7-8 I would walk the room thinking about it for awhile and go home wondering if I blew it. If your happy with the cost I would take the gentleman’s advice above and seek out an importer that would do it as discreetly as possible.

IF I am reading this right, the gun is in the states now and you would be importing it into Canada? If so, I would think about moving to the US and avoid the import markings.

Post 9/11 has completely stopped me attending American shows . Prior to that I belonged to 4 or more state collectors associations and would be at a show at least once a month . Great company , great meals away . Sadly missed . BATF and Homeland have NO sense of humour of a firearm being possessed by an alien ( me ) post or pre 1898 !!

I have to ask.............can an import mark exemption be obtained for certain collector status examples here in the U.S. if it will truly degrade the collectability and value of a higher end item?
Just curious if such an exemption exists for uber collectible/pricey items.

I recently had a gun imported from Norway, and the importer here (in Galesburg, Ill) stamped it just above the serial number, on the butt in small letters. It not a problem at all, and I don't think it damages its value. It has to be marked somewhere, so one has to accept that.

The pics posted later show a fantastic gun. Congratulations. Looks totally original. Is there a number stamped inside The right grip? Dave

And the grips match! My previous estimate of value was too low. Can you share your pm with everyone? Interesting info. This gun couldn’t have been in a holster for long. I defer to Terry on value. Dave
