Default S&W 1917 Commercial Early S/N Question

Hi all, what is the earliest known serial number for the S&W 1917 Commercial .45 DA revolver? I ask because I saw a reference on this forum for one in the 167xxx range.

However, I have a line on one that is in the 165xxx range. It has the small trademark logo on the left side, is not marked "Made in the USA", and does not have the "1917" marking on the bottom of the butt.

I should have the revolver in hand next week. Thank you.

All the marking indicate a commercial 1917. Good for you.

I recall seeing one in the 62000 SN range - obviously a leftover/surplus military contract frame.

All would have surplus military frames until at least ~1926.

Lowest Commercial Model serial #:
15537 S, is a Commercial Model clearly made on one of the WW I produced frames in the 1 to ~175,000 WW I 1917 military serial number range. However, it is not known when it shipped.

• The lowest Com’l model in the SWCA database = #167382 shipped Oct, 1922.” Lee Jarrett

Yes, commercial models built using actual leftover/extra U.S government M1917 contract frames can be sprinkled throughout the "typical" WWI production run serial number range......as also with post-WWII delivery Brazilian M1917 examples. (I have a factory letter stating that any Brazilian M1917 example can be from s/n 1 through 210,000 due to them using both style frames for the fulfillment Brazilian contract(s). )

When S&W started using the different non-U.S. government M1917 style frames for later commercial models, pre-WWII Brazilian 1937 contract examples, etc., is typically when we see a "harder" serial number range with regards to them starting at a certain serial number and running through a certain serial number.

As with everything there always seems to be an exception to the "rule".

Please forgive my ignorance, but why isn't the revolver in the 15xxx range listed as opposed to 167,xxx?

#15537 was in a thread by the owner.

Many guns do not get listed in the SWCA database because it's not known about or was too difficult to access early on.
