Love the new knock-around stocks on the Outdoorsman
Yeah, I'm gonna catch cr@p for sharing this but, I am really happy with the look and feel of the new stocks I acquired for my Grandfather's Pre-war 38-44 Outdoorsman.
I have been timid about using Granddad's 70 year old target stocks, for fear of damaging them. So, I've tried most everything from Altamont BATELEURs and Magnas, to some nice S&W post-war Magnas, and even Pachmayr rubber grips, in an attempt to preserve the targets.
I finally found some really nice looking Thai, Siamese Rosewood "Coke bottle" knock-offs that fit the bill. For the money ($49.95, delivered) these feel really nice in the hand, look great enough to not be embarrassed to use at the range, and set the gun off nicely.
Yes, I will probably display the gun with his old custom targets but, I will shoot with these, and not worry about being period correct or matching to the gun...or looking plain ugly, like the rubbers.
I highly recommend these for your shooters.

Beautiful lumber. I have ordered several sets of Thai grips over the years. Craftsmanship is sometimes an issue, but the wood is always very nice.
Thanks for sharing,

I have owned a few sets of import grips through the years. Always like the wood choices but fit on frame was usually a bit suspect.
I would suggest having a layer of Ren wax on the grip frame. I have run across some grips rubbing against the bluing because of movement or possible light warping.
I use Ren wax on all my grip frames but especially on anything aftermarket. Including my Roper grips.
Wish you luck with this set.

I like those too.
They just need a little relieving on the backsides of the stocks, usually around the back of the trigger guard so they'll tighten up and close the gap on the front of them.
Coat the front of the grip frame with black felt pen, install the stocks, then take them off and look for the black ink marks on the back of the grips to see where they need relief to fit better.

My only negative comment about the Thai stocks is that my favorite pair (on a stainless K frame) apparently weren’t completely seasoned when made. They fit well when new, but got a little loose within a year. Although I shimmed them a bit when I discovered this, I noticed at the range yesterday they seem to have shrunk just a bit more. I’m thinking of glass bedding them to eliminate the problem, but just wanted to mention that it can be a problem. Otherwise I really like the look and feel of my Thai-made grips.

Froggie go easy on the bedding and gob on the release agent! Don’t want to permanently install those stocks! On revolvers, I have used spray wax on the metal parts, several coats. I have heard of folks using cooking spray also.
I did a pair on one of my competition revolvers. One half at a time. Got a good enough fit, the screw was not needed to hold them on for a complete match.

I suppose I should include a shot of the insides of the Thai stocks.
