Default Old 32-20 and Critters

I live on the edge of a forest with lots of critters that cross my place. This year has been a hot wet summer with hot meaning the "wind chill" factor is 108. I let my two German Shepherds out at daybreak each morning, as I was making coffee I heard growling and barking just a few feet passed the patio where we drink our morning coffee. I have learned to pay attention to their communications. I grabbed my S&W 32-20 off the kitchen shelf and made the few steps where the dogs were jumping away from something in the high grass. I made the recall command and both of the shepherds came in, I was only feet away from them when I saw the Copperhead coiled and striking at them. At a range of 6 feet straight into the ground I fired 4 rounds of soft lead ammo. The S&W 32-20 is one of my favorite critter guns to the point of owning 4 S&Ws and two Winchesters in this caliber. I do handload for them which is a plus at the current price of a box of factory ammo. This gun with serial number 58415 is old , to say the least, but she shoots true and better than my old eyes will allow her. The holster is from H.H. Herser and marked Sheriff's Dept. Palm Beach.

She doesn't look a day over 30! I killed a lot of commperheads when we lived at the lake. I got bitten by one when I was in college, and one bit my dog at the lake many years downstream. I carried a pocket 410. I own one 32-20 model of 1905. Unfortunately, I have yet to shoot it due to scarcity and price of ammon for it.

Killed one yesterday afternoon while working on one of my deer ground blinds. Kept hearing something move in the brush and it finally showed itself after about 20 minutes. It didn't like the 7/8 oz load out of the right barrel.

Could have sold it here for $250. Pawn shop has to turn a profit to survive.

I have a couple of the Winchester Models. One currently has a 6 1/2” barrel and the other is from the factory with a 5” barrel. Both are fun to shoot.

Well, Paul. We could make a trade but then we'd both still be in the same situation.

I hear ya Delta. I have a couple and of course load for them. Here is one of mine with the SHOT SHELLS I came up with last year. Works just fine for me. Always been a fan of this cartridge.

Okay. I feel cornered. Other people are posting pics of .32-20 HE revolvers. I guess I should show you one.

This example is my favorite of several that live in my safe. It letters to March 15, 1904, and shipped to Phil Bekeart in San Francisco. It is a 5" target model and originally wore black hard rubber stocks. The post-1910 Circassian walnut stocks were on it when I purchased it 15 years ago.

I recently received a letter on another .32-20 I bought last year. Roy had suggested lettering it and I'm very glad I took his advice.

THAT is what is known in the trade as a teaser, guys. I haven't taken photos of that one yet, but when I do I'll post them and pull a Paul Harvey: I'll tell you the "rest of the story."

Great story...I'm a fan of the 32-20 and have a couple early H.E. models to go with a Model 92 Winchester. The story on the Winchester is that it was owned by an old timer from Wenatchee, WA. that had an apple orchard. He considered the deer that got into his trees pests and shot them with the 32-20. He always shot them at close range, aiming for the ear or the eye, claimed to have never missed. When asked how many he had culled he said "over a hundred easily, we never were at a loss for meat." My grandmother hunted with a little Brno Mauser in .22 hornet, she used to bring the meat in while the rest of the guys were out hunting and she had cooked up breakfast and done the dishes. She also claimed to be able to hit whatever she wanted under a hundred yards, the eye or ear being favorite targets. Her son used the same rifle to keep a couple families fed during hard times while the mill was closed, nobody paid attention to the report of the .22 hornet.

My wife's "kitchen gun"

That ole 32 will shoot plum clean through a man. It must be heck on Copperheads

Very nice 32. I hear that they were fairly common during the depression era and would pair nicely with a rifle in the same caliber.

OK, so here is mine--sans any ammo. Shipped to Wolf & Klar in 1925 and wearing their signature MOP steerhead grips.

I’ve had a couple of M&Ps in 32-20 over the years, but they have been what could charitably called “shooter grade.” One of these days I’d love to get a really nice one to really see their potential... I have had a couple of other guns, long and short in 32-20, so I know the cartridge can do good things.

I’m curious, JR... what did you use to make those shot rounds? Are the standard cases with crimp added, or another caliber you modified?

Not fond of the corn cobb condition but you just don't turn down a target 32-20,,, do you?
As told to me this one did some Ranching , Cowboying and meat getting on both sides of the border back in the day and that would sure explain a lot.
Funky on the outside but well loved on the inside. First time I had the sideplate off all you could smell was kerosene. Probably the only thing it was ever cleaned with.
Grips on it now are for shooting. Grips that came on it were whittled out firewood with a iron stove bolt with a square nut set almost flush.

This one DOES tell me stories.

The rear sight is a “Wondersight” by Firearms Development Labs. I don’t believe they are made anymore. I have one left. Since I can’t get that one back or the gun @ 2.5 x what I paid for it. Any Smith with the right side top screw can utilize it or you can drill the frame fir it.

There is a .32 long HE at the evil LGS that has one of those sights on it. Took a quick look at it in the case before I left town. Gonna go back next week and see if it still there.

When I was a young lad the .32/20 revolver was popular and thought to be a "Very Powerful" caliber like a .357magnum is today

If you are interested in getting a Wondersight, they were being made by the following. I purchased one and installed it on my Brazilian 1917, they work great for people with messed up eyes like mine. Fixed sights never work out for me, at least not to my point of aim. [email protected]

I was gifted a FDL Wondersight by a fellow forum member several years ago. I had planned on using it on an I frame, but it just didn’t feel right to me and is just waiting for its next “assignment.” I would think that on the much larger N frame or even the mid-sized K frame it would be fine.

Back when my Wondersight arrived I also looked it up on the inter web, and they still were being sold through their website back then. I don’t know whether they are as likely to be used these days as they are secured to the frame by the fifth screw (original) or you have to drill and tap a screw hole on a later frame. Maybe I should go ahead and install it on my current 32-20 M&P... it’s shooter grade, after all!

Was suppose to be duck hunting back in January this year, but took an afternoon walk in the woods. The mid-1920s .32-20 Hand Ejector here took a squirrel snack from out of the top of a large oak tree near the lake.

Something that was pointed out to me by an old gunsmith about the Wondersight. Before you install it on your revolver, take a piece of black electrical tape and stick it onto the area that fits up against your piece, I stuck it on and then trimmed away the excess with a razorblade. It will protect the metal finish and when time comes to uninstall if you should do that you will not have any indication that it was ever on.

I have had a couple of other guns, long and short in 32-20, so I know the cartridge can do good things.

I’m curious, JR... what did you use to make those shot rounds? Are the standard cases with crimp added, or another caliber you modified?

Froggie

Froggie, I make those using a Hornady Blank die set. 32/20 brass.

Fun revolvers are they.

While mine has holster wear, its charge holes, bore and action are virtually band new.

I reload the Lyman cast 115 grain bullet sized to .312 for excellent accuracy.

I've got four handguns and four rifles in .32-20. Only one is a S&W, this 1905 3rd Change mfg. around 1912.

Very nice 32. I hear that they were fairly common during the depression era and would pair nicely with a rifle in the same caliber.
The S&W .32-20s were most popular before WW I. Sales dropped off and production ended in the late 1920s. A few were sold over the years and they were still in the catalog until about 1940.

The popularity of the 32-20 from prior to WW I didn’t really die out in the war... although there weren’t a lot of new 32-20 shooters after the war, it took until those old all supporters died off before the caliber went on hiatus. The second WW coincided with the loss of many of these older shooters and it wasn’t until Cowboy Action Shooting and other nostalgic events that it reawakened. And here we are!

BTW, I read somewhere that even through the slowest days of 32-20 production, reloading dies for this caliber stayed in the top 10 sellers about every year. Of course Lyman’s 3118/311008 mould, the prototypical bullet design for the 32-20, remained in production from the late 19th Century until being delisted for 2020.
