Very nice, I like it. I think you're missing a digit on the SN as you listed it. I have S172898, also a 6.5 inch which shipped in 1957. You'll need a letter to know the exact ship date but your's is probably sometime in 1957 too. Odd that the cokes would have an SN, if that is what you meant, don't think I've ever seen cokes with an SN. Enjoy it.

Fantastic!!! Great acquisition. I couldn’t/shouldn’t own a gun like that because I’d carry and shoot it a lot.

I think the OP forgot a comma between Cokes and matching numbers.
I have never read/observed Cokes with a Sn. stamp. Of course Im
probably incorrect.

Really nice. Too bad someone in the past modified the Cokes with some shallow finger grooves in the front. Bet they' feel good in the hand though.

THAT thing is awesome. I’ve been developing an affinity for the “pre-“ models lately, particularly a Pre-27. Very nice OP

I just got my 29-2 with cokes yesterday, think it’s my new favorite. Your is a real beauty love the craftsmanship on the pre models and I feel like the trigger may be better on them then some of the later guns I’ve handled. Congrats on a must have for the collection.

Yes they do. Saw that but had to have it. My ffl thinks it’s produce like that and said the Coke’s are numbered to the frame when he check the serial numbers. Will investigate and let everyone know.

I was tolled by my ffl when he remove the coke’s to verify the serial numbers that the number match the cokes waiting for the paperwork to go through then I’ll investigate . And will let everyone know . How ever I did see on smith and Wesson form that they did Either pencil mark the numbers or stamp them back in those days.

I have only seen one pair of stocks serial numbered to a 44 Magnum by the factory. It is on an engraved gun where the stocks were taken off the gun for engraving and serial numbered to ensure the frame and the stocks were kept together. I have seen (and own) several guns where the stocks were numbered by a former owner.

Update to coke bottle grips. Just got possession of my pre 29 smith and Wesson 44 mag. They do not have matching serial numbers on them they don’t even have a date on them .

I didn't start seeing dated grips until the 1970s-1980s.

Very nice Pre-29!
These are so desirable because they are so well made and conceived as to be of exceptional utility and beauty. The finger grooves on the grips are very subtle and indicative of the good taste (and skills) of the former owner. This is entirely different than bubba work.
I like how the grooves taper off towards the checkering border and do not touch beyond that point.
Your new S&W is in the enviable state that it can be admired for it's nice state of condition, yet still taken out to be enjoyed.
Well done!
Jim
