Default M&P model 1905 Fourth Change Rear Sights!!!

I have the above described revolver with the small u notch rear sight. My old eyes have trouble with these sights but I enjoy shooting the revolver.Any suggestions more than just painting the front blade in order to see these sights better?

The earlier M&Ps (until the rear notch was widened around 1927) had horrible sights. I always wondered if S&W was aware of how bad they were, and if so, why didn't they improve them. There is nothing you can do to the sights, assuming that you don't want to diminish the gun's value. Adding a more modern front sight blade and widening the rear notch (or adding a Wondersight) would work.

COLLECTORS ALERT!!!!! LOOK AWAY, LOOK AWAY!!! DO NOT READ THIS POST!!!

If you use this revolver as a shooter and don't care about resale value, I would use a Swiss file to widen the rear notch and to make it square. The front blade can be filed down and the base slotted for a wider blade. If a holster gun, a Baughman ramp can be made and pinned in. For a target revolver, a simple Patridge would do the trick. Filing can correct windage and elevation issues.

I think DWalt has the best idea on how to improve the rear sight. The Wondersight attaches to the gun by providing a slightly longer top sideplate screw. So as long as you do not loose the original sideplate screw the gun can be returned to original condition by simply removing the Wondersight. I do not know if they are still being made but you could check eBay, GunBrokeror other internet sites for one. Take a look it is worth a try.

Here is a Wondersight installed. There is one for sale right now on a popular auction site that rhymes with flea bay.

Thanks everybody! This revolver is just too nice to file the sight or I would already done that! I will take a look at the Wondersight and see if it fits my budget.
