Default King Super Target

Picked this up from the dealer this morning.

4in barrel with a grooved back strap so I believe it started out as a target gun and for one reason or a another had the barrel chopped down to its current length and the King Super Target rib installed.

All the numbers match including the grips... when I took the stocks off the inside of the grip frame was filled with lead inserts!

Anyway here’s a quick picture

Trying to fill my King bullseye box with appropriate guns!

I definitely need a set of Target stocks for this one, might have to re allocate a set of Ropers from my Outdoorsman...

Very nice find! I was looking at that box when it was for sale, but I am now glad that you got it. I just love any King sighted gun. All my King equipped guns are Colts at this time but I plan to find a S&W with King sights in the future. I figure a nice set of pre war magnas would set your gun off nice too, either way she is a beauty.

Looks like a really fun gun. I hope to find a short bbl gun myself.

As far as it being cut it does appear that the roll mark is a bit further back than my SKT M&P
Maybe its not cut.
Could we see a pic of the crown and backstrap?

Nice gun and box!

I'm afraid your Outdoorsman (N frame) Ropers may not fit too well. But you may still be able to use them.

He may be referring to a set of K-22 Outdoorsman grips.

OR, I may be full of it!!!

Love the King Super Target Guns and your King shooters box. It will be fun to bring those to the range in that box!

I too love that little 4" KST. I have seen very few S&W KST's with barrels shorter than 6". And, as nice as those Ivories and service stocks are - you are right - that gun needs some Ropers. I look forward to seeing how it letters - the barrel does not look cut to me. Another possibility is that King could have grooved the front and back of the grip frame. King did all kinds of custom work.

What a fun find! Thanks for sharing it with the rest of us.

FWIW, I think I'd just go with a T-Grip or BK adapter with the regular service stocks.

All the numbers match including the grips... when I took the stocks off the inside of the grip frame was filled with lead inserts!

For comparison, here's a photo of a cut pre-war M&P Target - your rollmarks look to be more centered than the marks on this gun...

Here's the other side for your comparison:

Also, I did check my early post war .38 M&P KST conversion and it has no grooves on the grip straps...

younggun22,
That is a really nice find. Don't you wish it could talk and tell it's story? I know it will fit in real nice in that King Bullseye box! I would like to see pictures of how the inserts were done too. What is your serial number with x's, if you prefer, if you don't mind. Here is my K22 Outdoorsman with the KST treatment:

I tossed the inserts, they were nothing special.

The S/N is 606xxx

You guys have some beautiful KST’s... mines like the ugly duckling!

I would not toss the inserts until you get a letter!! Sometimes you do not know what you have until you own something awhile. Who knows maybe king offered them or those weights might have been in a Camp Perry match or who knows.
Could we see a pic?

They were crudely made, it was not up to Kings quality standard

I also find it interesting that its been king modified but still the original grips were kept with the gun.

On regular guns they get separated a lot and the fact the owner was likely a target guy and might have used target grips.

I get a vibe this gun has not changed hands much.

I get the impression that the original owner wanted to create a “fighting” gun instead of a “target” gun

Upon closer inspection the grips do not match, the numbers were tough to read and only glanced at them quickly

Roper and Outdoorsmans just plain look great together.

I did like the Ropers on your SKT as they are not a really oversized set for that 4 inch MP

Roper grips go with a King conversion like whipped cream on an ice cream sundae! Paper target or bunny rabbit, anything should be proud to be shot with that revolver.

I'll bet my Birdseye Ropers would look pretty on your King gun.

Yours looks like the one I let go of back in the mid 70's, I traded it back to the dealer I got from straight across for the New Colt Highwayman MK something or other...the warning bells and whistles should have gone off when he didn't blink an eye when I asked "Throw in a box of shells?"
