Good Evening -
I'm trying to identify this "older" S&W .38 Spl revolver for my brother-in-law.
The revolver belonged to his father and probably hasn't been fired in at least 50 years. As per the caliber marking on the barrel, it is a .38 Special (and a cartridge does chamber in all the chambers in the cylinder.).
My BIL would like to know approximately how old the revolver is, if possible and the model. (I think it's an M&P, but am not sure. There is no model # or dash # on the frame under the crane.)
The serial # is 416774. The following patent dates are noted on the top of the barrel:
1. Feb. 8. 06.
2. Sept. 14. 09.
3. Dec. 29. 14.
Would it be safe to fire standard .38 Spl ammunition - nothing +P or otherwise. Just the ole garden variety 158 gr. lead bullet .38's. The revolver locks up tight and there is no play in the cylinder with the hammer cocked for single action use.
Sorry for the quality of the photos, but they were the best I could do with my phone.
Thanks for any help in the matter.
