Default Model 33 SB 2"

Hi all, newly rejoined to the forums. Been a Smith guy for 50 years and have owned hundreds. I just came across something that has me perplexed. My son traded for a little nickel 33 yesterday. He called me describing it and everything sounded right until he mentioned a 2" barrel. I laughed and told him that he had misread the model # and actually had a model 32... a few minutes later I got a photo of the model #. It definitely says 33. Barrel # matches frame #. What's the deal, any of yall ever seen a 2" model 33?

The SCSW 4th edition says 2" barrel is rare.

Yes 2" is rare on a Regulation Police (Mod 33) I frame. A decade later in '74 both the 32 and 33 were discontinued.

Technically it's a Terrier (Mod 32) with a sq butt option if it isn't marked Regulation Police on the barrel.

The .32 Models 30 and 31 merged into only one model in 1974, the M31 with rd or sq butt option and either barrel length, 2" or 4", which was discontinued 1991.

Thanks guys. Had never run into that one before. Value about the same as a model 32 in like condition?

wescus,

Pls note corrections in my post #3 above, my memory failed me once again.

Yes, value about the same as the .32 models, although a little less market demand. The .32s have had a resurgence of interest recently.

But a premium for the rare configuration!

Default 2" 33?

I had a blued 2" mod 33 many years back. When I lettered the gun it came back as legit! I (foolishly) sold the gun for twice the value of a standard mod 33! It's on the list of ones that I should never have sold!

wescus,
Here is one I had lettered just to make sure it really came with 2" barrel. It is also nickel. SN#90270. Is yours numbered close?
Just curious.
Congrats on your find.

Default model 33 nickle snub

I acquired the 33 that wescus had. Its serial number is 90298 and here is a picture of it and it does have the logo. I do plan to letter it to see if it is the same shipment as Ray's since it is 28 numbers away.

Blaine,
Thanks for sharing your new acquisition. Looking forward to what your historical letter will reveal.
Thanks again!

Ok, letter and shipping records came in with information on the other 9 of these and their serial numbers in this shipment. Letter advises they shipped to Rex Firearms, but shipping records support HH Harris. This makes 15 of these models in this configuration known when you count Ray's (SFIDEC) letter that shows the 5 shipped to International Distributors in Miami. This should help!
