King Sighted Guns ... and a Corny King Poem
I know that we have lots of threads about King sights. But that is because they are so dang cool. So I hope that you're not too offended that I start another one...
A few months ago, at a local Show and Tell with a bunch of King enthusiasts we were asked to bring our King sighted guns AND a Poem about King Sights. When it came time to share poetry, this is the corny poem that I wrote and shared (get ready to roll your eyes) :
KINGs
by RKmesa 2020
I bought lots of guns in the Thirties
But the sights did not work with my eyes.
They were short, small and narrow
On top of the barrel,
Almost, as if in disguise.
The screws that attached them were tiny
And always seemed to shoot loose.
When the matches were tight
Sights would shift to the right
…At least that would be my excuse.
Then I noticed the guy that was winning
With groups that were all in the ring
His slick Smith & Wesson
Showed fruits of progression
With sights and a rib that said “KING”.
So I cleaned and oiled my revolver
And scrubbed it up with a brush
Then with check and a letter
“Please, please make my gun better…”
Off to King’s it went in a rush.
It finally returned three months later
And I opened the box all a stammer,
There lay beauty and function
My Smith at the junction
New Rib, Sights, and cased cockeyed hammer.
When back at the range with my buddies
My King Super Target in hand
I achieved all my goals
Punching tight ragged holes
In the paper attached to the stand.
So for shooters who live in the desert
If you want folks your praises to sing,
Put in effort and practice
But don’t shoot the cactus
And... make sure that your sights are stamped “KING”.
And these are the guns that I took to the Show N Tell.
An early post-war M&P King Supertarget:
An early K-22 Outdoorsman Super Target:
A K-22 4" Masterpiece:
A 38/44 Outdoorsman King Super Target:
A RM that shipped to King (Cockeyed Hammer, Sights and trigger stop):
A pre-war M&P King Super Police (engraved by Orville Kuhl):
... and a few more RMs with King front sights.
I would love to see your Kings, even if they have been posted a hundred times...

RK
Im just pretty jealous overall. The Smiths and
the fact you have a group that meets nearby to share
the Gun collecting with. Apparantly a decent group of guys. Luv the King pcs you've found. Cant even pick one
out over the others. THE 38/44 and the 4 inch 22
are nice though. Great pics and sharing effort w us.
Best Randy.

Here are a couple big-bore full-rib S&W King Super Target triplelock revolvers.
The bottom revolver is .44 Special, and the top revolver is .44 Russian.

Great post! Nothing corny about that poem, it brought a tear to my eye.
The only pistol I have that has the King treatment Is stamped with a little horse.

Nice, Richard. The poem made me grin and the guns made me reel.
It's too hot to do any yard work today, so I have a chance to dig out my guns with King mods and rephotograph them. I'll add them to your thread if that actually happens.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, my dream is still for a set of Super Police sights installed on my Baby Chief’s Special. If I’ve got my dates right, that would not have happened in the King’s Gunworks shop though. The timing wouldn’t match up.

Here’s a 4in King Super Target. Not nearly as nice as the ones in this thread but pretty interesting with the 4in barrel.

My only King Sighted gun. Registered Magnum 2269.
The base is original, but I'm not sure about the sight blade.

K22 Outdoorsman S/N 661299. One of four shipped April 16, 1937 to D.W. King Co., San Francisco, CA. This revolver was outfitted by King to include a King Super Target rib sight and Cockeyed hammer.

Here are a couple of mine.....two 38/44's and a model of 1950 Military 44 Hand Ejector. All got the King's treatment somewhere along the way.

We have a poet and didn't know it.
Wow all the nice King sighted guns. I must say that engraved snub nose really trips my trigger.
Thanks for showing them.

Very well done Richard................
Never having been qualified as a critic of poetry I can say that your poem beat the heck out of some I've tried to read. Not well qualified on the engraved guns either but as an interested observer your "Guns" are a sight for sore eyes!

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but not sure whether the tears are from the satire of the poem, or the beauty of the guns....Hopefully on the verge of adding a pic or two to this thread...

My single King-sighted gun pales in comparison to those shown in this thread, but here goes anyway...
A .38-44 Heavy Duty from 1949 that was converted for target (Bullseye) use, possibly by Kings. It has King sights on it with the reflector front sight. The hammer was reworked, but not to the "cockeyed" configuration - just broadened and checkered the spur - it is stamped Micro. The stocks are by Keith Brown...
Adios,
Pizza Bob

Lot of absolutely beautiful guns in this thread. Lots of Roper grips as well. I don't recall ever seeing so many in one place before.

I just saw this post. Can you please tell us a bit more about that sleeved 38/44? It reminds me of a sleeved gun owned by Modified/Caleb...

1940 Colt Shooting Master 357 with King rear sight and Cockeyed hammer:
And no, I’m not going to apologize about it being a Colt

Couple quick questions. Who (KB?) made the grips for the RM ? Who made the grips for the King Super Police (engraved by Orville Kuhl)? Was it Kuhl ?
Regards, Mike

My first revolver purchase after getting out of the army was a Colt Officer's Match piece like this without Sandersons. Most accurate revolver I've ever owned, I traded it back to the dealer that sold it to me for a Colt Trooper .357 and a box of shells...the red flags and warning buzzers should have gone off because he never gave anyone a deal. Later when I noticed the piece in his "special" case with a highly marked up price and mentioned it to me he replied "King don't work anymore, but you probably didn't know that."

Mike:
Yes, the RM grips are an earlier set of Keith Brown's Kearsarge style grips.
I believe that the pearl grips on the 2" King Super Police are factory grips that were added after the gun left the factory. It letters as shipping from the factory with "checkered walnut non-monogram round butt grips." It shipped on Nov 27, 1933 to Adolf Blaich, 583 Market Street, San Francisco, CA, and I have been told that it is among the earliest 2" M&Ps known to have been shipped.
On the other hand, I believe that the grips on the Kuhl engraved K-22 O/D (post 24 above) were carved by Kuhl. They are similar to grips on this Kuhl engraved RM (photographed with the Kuhl K-22 Outdoorsman)...

I always believed that the pearl grips on the 2" King Super Police were factory grips that were added after the gun left the factory. Working from memory, I believe that it letters as shipping from the factory with standard wood grips. The 2"er shipped on Nov 27, 1933 to Adolf Blaich, a distributer in SF, and I have been told that it is among the earliest 2" M&Ps known to be shipped.
