Funny.

I got guns older than me, some of them way older.

I got got guns younger than me.

But I don't have any guns my age.

Even my teeth are some 7 years younger than me.

Default DOB Gun

I recently found one of my grail guns, a Model 26-1 Commercial Overrun and if that wasn’t enough, the ship date request revealed that the gun shipped April 1989 which happens to be my birthday month/year. Then I see a stamp on the warranty card presumed to be the packaging/shipping date and it is my actual DOB!

Eh. It just doesn't compare to a pre-war gun. After owning 4 pre-war .357s the only post 1960s S&Ws that I like at all are those mid to late 90's guns. They were really doing an awesome job on them at that time, and I've greatly admired the ladysmith line in particular from that era. Of course that's not birth year for me.

I had a bren 10, both slides and everything. I found it to be a oversized CZ that was so valuable I was afraid to shoot it and ruin its NIB value. So I sold it and bought pre-war S&Ws.

Otherwise none of those guns interest me at at all.

The old smiths are just so good they have ruined me for other guns.

@Hoosier45 -- According to the box label, your gun was made on April 25, 1989. The SPEC ORD box is the Julian date of manufacture: the 115th day of 1989. Also, if you have a complete set of boxed items, there should be a empty, fired cartridge case in it with a date of the test firing on it. The SCSW 4th says it is usually within a couple of days of manufacture.

This is probably as close as I'll get to an actual birthday gun. A .38 M&P that shipped on July 13, 1949. The day before I was born. Thanks again to Art Doc for letting it go!

1955 was an interesting year.

Playboy debuts.
Disneyland opens.
Chevrolet introduces the overhead valve V-8 engine.
Rock & Roll is born.

I never looked for a 1955 gun but I wound up with several. I'll stick to the S&W products.

Pair of modified 1950 44 Target Models. Shipped April and August of 1955. The April ship was one week after I was born.

Mine is.

I was quite fortunate to have both eyes open when a gentleman on the forum here posted a copy of the Jinks letter regarding his K22. Had he not questioned one attribute on the gun I suspect he wouldn't have lettered it. Since he did, and he posted the results, I was able to see my birth date on the letter. The rest is history.

Thanx for the back story on your acquisition.

I've managed to stumble upon eight Baby Chiefs from '52.

The earliest, 2928, shipped in February, and has the earliest known smooth ramp front sight. The latest, 21249, shipped in October and has a serrated ramp front sight.

I've seen only one that shipped in my birth month: June '52, and I was too stubborn about the guy's asking price to own it.

Note to self: Kick myself every time I think about not buying it!

K-38 shipped early 1951. Yes, I know the tools are anachronistic, but the seller threw them in, what was I going to say? No?

It's in much better shape I.

Adios,

Default birth year guns

1952. Had a Winchester model 70 in 270, sold it to finance the purchase of a model 25 Jovino Special. Had a Brno model 1, sold it. Have four K-22's, 2 from '51, 2 from '53. A 38/44 Outdoorsman from '53. Haven't been lucky enough to find that '52 , guess I will just have to keep looking!!!

You mean Art Doc actually lets things go?! I’m hoping that one day he’ll contact me and say he’s ready to ship a couple of his guns I covet my direction.

This well-used Model 27-2 shipped a couple of months after I shipped. It was one of my first N-Frame .357s purchased and still gets lots of range time when I take my boys out in the desert.

This 1957 Colt .45 came out the same year I did. It didn't look like this, though. It's on that Time/Life book because I showed that engraved gun in it to my friend the late Frank Leaman and said "engrave my gun like that".

This is a great thread,

Thanks to all who have shared.

A birth year gun is most certainly on my wants list but as yet no joy. With my fledgling collection of Chiefs Specials I will be looking for a NIB example from 1964. Hopefully one day I will be able to post pics.

Cheers,

Roy

Default One for Me...One for Her

My lovely Wife and I both have S&W Birth Year Guns...of course I bought hers without her knowledge or consent, just because I’m such a nice guy. Diamonds are forever, but so are well maintained revolvers.

Mine is a 1950 38 M&P Snub Nose.

Hers is a 1952 Baby Chief.

This model 36 left the factory November 1960; same month and year I was born. So when I acquired it I had to dress it up a little.

I have just one birth year gun, and just stumbled on to it, not looking for one at the time. I have not lettered it, Roy says it shipped in November, 1955, and I was born late October, 1955.

4" Heavy Duty with original nickle and numbered stocks.

Bruce
