Default Birth year guns

Many of us here have sought to own one or more S&W firearms that date from their year of birth. I thought it would be interesting to see any that you could show.

My birth year was 1939. The two I have from my year (finally after years of searching) are an M&P .38 Special target with a humpback hammer, shipped in June, and a nickeled .38 Special M&P that shipped on August 30. Two days after it shipped, the Germans invaded Poland, starting WWII. That makes this revolver one of the last "pre war" M&P revolvers.

Show us what ya got!

John

1939:

The World Fair in NYC
The International Exposition in San Francisco

Movies:

Gone with the Wind
Stagecoach
Mr. Smith goes to Washington
The Wizard of Oz
Wuthering Heights

World War II begins as Germany invades Poland 9/1/1939

Birth Year

Birth Month

Birth DAY!!!

Yep, we were both shipped from our respective factories on the same day.

I know exactly what time I was shipped, but, Roy can't be any more specific about my K22. Ha.

Enjoy,
bdGreen

I have two birth year guns. An M&P and a Model 36. Interestingly, both, acquired at different times from different sources, were ex-NYPD guns. The 36 shipped a month before my birth date, so technically I was already around

I also have a birthday pistol. Unfortunately, the Model 1913 shipped several decades before the right year.

This Colt 1911 was manufactured in 1950, as was I. When I was born in November of 1950 my Dad had gone in at Inchon with McArthur. I was born in the Army hospital at Ft. Bliss, TX.

The history on this pistol is that the NY State Guard ordered them to replace WWII 1911's recalled to the US Army for use in Korea. I have the Colt history letter for it.

The only one I have is a 5 in. 38 S&W shipped in 1941. I think it's going too be hard too find anything else shipped in 41. It would be also nice to have a gun with 92841 serial number. I think I'll have to be content with that .38 S&W. Larry

I had a Russian SKS carbine that came off the assembly line the same year I did. Unfortunately I had to sell it when I lost my job.

I've got two or three, and have sold one other, and given one away (not all S&W's). This M&P with Roy Fishpaw stocks is one of the ones I still have:

Those are beautiful. I am a 2/54 model and have tried to find something the same age when I was pooping green but haven't come across it yet! Problem is I keep getting old and the guns keep getting more expensive AND older!

I’m surprised there’s no wise cracks about flint locks in this thread.

I was born in 1931. So not many guns were sold during the depression. I had older & newer ones but not from that year. Flint locks be damned.

I decided it could be any of several models, but it had to be from the birth year my honey and I share.

Since I love old Sigs I had bought this 1992, used P220 at the LGS. Not really a collectors item but its my son's birth year so it stays and will be passed on one day.

A birth year gun has always eluded me. I've got S&Ws from all through the 1950s. Including 1953 & 55. But alas, my year, 1954, has never come to pass.
I even put an ad in the Want To Buy section once. No joy.

I only have this one, from 1958. It's a S Highway Patrolman, or as some say, a no dash 28. It came with this 6" barrel, but I have found the proper 4" barrel and am seriously thinking about swapping it out for a while.

Finding another no dash 28 in a 4" is a very difficult and expensive endeavor these days.

I’ve got a K22 and a Savage 99 from 1950 but it’s accidental. I’ve never went out of my way to buy birth year guns. Never even thought about it until I got on gun forums. I was not up to high tech, when I saw posts about guys wanting to date a gun, I thought they should get a life. My dates on guns are cut off dates on manufacture of certain model.

Thanks for starting this thread, PALADIN/John. It gives us a unique opportunity to see some interesting pieces that have a special place in the hearts of some of our membership.
I'm a 1951 model, and was fortunate to acquire this three-digit serial numbered (Baby) Chiefs Special. Per Roy it shipped August 24, 1951 in its current configuration to the Elmira NY Department of Correction. There were two Chiefs Specials in the shipment (the other one was #16). It has weathered the years somewhat better than I.

I bought a used 19-3 at a gun show. Later, when researching, I found that it shipped the same month I did. Not anything I was looking for, but pretty cool all the same.
Any time we're shooting for bragging rights (or cash!) and I have my druthers, that's the girl I take to the dance. Trigger is second to none.

I've lucked into a few birth year Smith's. Ship dates from different months in 1951.

Model 1950 Target, K-38, .38 M&P

It's not a Smith but it is from my birth year.

I don't have one but did.
I had a 1954 4" Highway Patrolman and I gave it to a good friend that was born the same year that I was.

One that is close. A 19-2 that popped out in either very late '62, when I came out, or very early '63.

Not a Smith, but it is a birthday year gun and pretty special. Low number original 1965 Colt SP1 rifle...

I did't know that owning a birth year firearm was a thing until I ran into a Romanian m44 with a bold 1954 on top of the receiver, at a gun show. I could not pass it up.

1970 for me....

I think this might a one of a kind. Here is the last paragraph of the letter.

"We have researched your Smith & Wesson Model 19-3 Combat Magnum Special Production, caliber .357 Magnum......serial number K953802, was shipped from our factory on July 6, 1970, and delivered to Charles Greenblatt Inc., New York City, NY. This revolver was listed as being built for Officer William B. O'Donald New York City Department of Corrections. The records indicate that revolver was shipped with a 2 1/2 inch barrel equipped with a yellow ramp front sight, nickel barrel, nickel cylinder, blue frame, and dark smooth rosewood grips. "

Default Birth year guns

There were 49 stars on the flag when we left the factory. 17 no-dash.

I was born in 1981.

There's no guns I want that were made in 1981.

I don't like this game.

Colt Detective Special 1980. What made this special is I bought it on my 40th birthday back in February.

This..This...

You don't want this?

Model 65-2 serial 7D71757 was shipped in November 1981. I hope that this helps. Roy

Now, take that back.

Lots of candidates... nice N frame. Maybe a Colt Gold Cup. Even a Remington Nylon 66. That would be a good 81 gun. Bren Ten. Model 39...

My wife's birthday is Aug 24 1940. While not intentional, this 5" .38 special was shipped to The Norwegian Air Force in Canada, otherwise known as Little Norway, on Sept 20 1940. Germany had overrun Norway in about March 1940. They demanded that the King appoint a puppet Prime Minister friendly to Germany. He refused, putting the issue up to a vote, saying that he would abdicate the throne if the country wanted to acquiesce. He won the vote in a landside, and had to flee Norway and set up a government-in-exile in England. The Air Force had to leave, and set up a base at the Toronto airport in Canada. They apparently did a lot of interesting things during the War.

Here is a a picture of this all-original revolvers, that was eventually used by the resistance as WW2 wore on.

This is the factory letter for the revolver.

This next picture is the invoice, which is very interesting. This is for the entire shipment of 625 revolvers. The export license is dated Aug 24, 1940, my wife's birthday exactly ! 500 were 5", and 125 were 6".

Interesting bit of trivia, Mike.

I have two August, 1940 guns. They are both K22/40 Masterpieces. And, of course, they are in the same sequence of serial numbers as yours.
Actually, one of my August 1940 guns is the last published serial number for the run of K22/40's.

And your gun is only 1,900 numbers off of that one.
Ponder that for a mo..

Bruce

I bought the gun for an entirely different reason, and then it had to be imported from Norway. Subsequently, I realized that it was a birth year gun for her, not that she cared. Then, tonight, rereading that invoice, I realized that the export license was granted exactly on her birth date. Maybe its trivia, but that's a rare circumstance! How many of the postings in this thread are an exact match of the birth date?!

Regards, Mike
